Louisiana Right to Life Opposes Final Vote on “Cloture”

For Immediate Release: Contact: LA Right to Life: Benjamin Clapper, December 8, 2009
Metairie, LA — On Tuesday, Senator Landrieu voted against the Nelson Amendment that would have prohibited the government funding of abortion in Senator Reid’s health care bill, H.R. 3590.
Benjamin Clapper, Executive Director of the Louisiana Right to Life Federation, made the following comments after the vote:
“Whether pro-life or pro-choice, we should be able to agree that it is not our government’s role to fund abortion on demand. Unfortunately, Senator Landrieu ignored the wishes of Louisianians and decided today that our government should pay for abortion.”
“Even though in the past she has claimed to oppose the government funding of abortion, her actions today showed otherwise. We are appalled that the Senior Senator from one of the most pro-life states in America decided that abortion is more important than the values of her constituents.”
“Since the amendment failed and the legislation still funds abortion, we urge both our Senators to oppose the final passage of H.R. 3590.” Clapper concluded.
The Nelson Amendment, similar to the “Stupak Amendment” which was supported by all members of the Louisiana House Delegation, would have safeguarded H.R. 3590 from funding abortion in two ways:
· Permanently prohibiting the new federal government insurance program, the “public option,” from paying for abortion, except to save the life of the mother, or in cases of rape or incest;
· Permanently prohibiting the use of the new federal premium subsidies to purchase private insurance plans that cover abortion (with the same exceptions as above).
