A cult of personality arises when a country’s leader uses mass media to create an idealized and heroic public image, often through unquestioning flattery and praise.^[1] Cults of personality are often found in dictatorships and Stalinist governments.

A cult of personality is similar to general hero worship, except that it is created specifically for political leaders. However, the term may be applied by analogy to refer to adulation of religious or non-political leaders.

Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union from 1924 until his death in 1953, is often credited with possessing the most extensive personality cult of all time.

1. Honesty Is the Best Policy Once as Jesus spent the whole night in prayer, he searched for apostles that would be honest and sincere. Jesus took a liking to Nathanael when he discovered an Israelite without guile in his heart. Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him. It seems that Jesus admired this angelic trait in men. As soon as he saw Philip bringing Nathanael forward to meet him, Jesus immediately noticed the virtue Nathanael lived. If I want to be highly thought of by Jesus, then I need to be sincere in mind and heart.

2. The Holy Angels The Church venerates today the holy service of three of the archangels. They stand out for their honest love for God’s most holy will. With such fidelity, St. Gabriel faithfully delivered the most important messages of human history to Zacharias and Mary. St. Michael wrestled with Lucifer and cast him out of heaven. St. Raphael came to the aid of Tobias in the Old Testament. In these angels there isn’t any duplicity of heart. God asks them a favor and they truly fulfill it. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to implement our talents and gifts toward a service of this nature? Wouldn’t it be great to be honest  instruments of God’s infinite love like these three archangels?

3. The Lord’s Gaze Jesus looks into the heart and doesn’t judge by appearances. Christ’s gaze penetrated Nathanael on this occasion. Jesus penetrates the motives of my heart even though they are kept hidden from the others. Jesus is the first one to know if I am true to the faith I have received. If I am faithful to the dictates of my conscience and obey God’s lead, in private or in public, then I have nothing to hide and nothing to lose. If on the other hand, I am dwindling in my surrender to Christ by boredom and monotony, then it is about time I sought renewal. Christ needs me! How many are dying and fading away because they lack Christ and his love? I, in turn, have been graced by many special spiritual favors! Jesus gazes into my eyes and dreams of my fidelity and love.

Conversation with Christ: Lord, thank you for the example of these three archangels and of the holy apostles. The holy apostles ended up shedding their blood for you and the holy angels aid us on our journey towards you. Lord, seeing so many lacking the faith, I resolve to be your tireless instrument, like them, so that many may come to praise you for all eternity.

Resolution: I will visit the Eucharist (if this is impossible, then kneel before the crucifix) and repeat confidently, Lord I wish to be your instrument – help me!

Will the politically radioactive “Cap and Trade” and “Health Care” bills be rammed through and take effect without a full stand-alone up, or down vote by your elected legislators whom you send to Washington to represent you? It is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Secret Washington plots against America proliferate at a pace that challenges one’s ability to keep track of them. Here’s the latest:

President Obama apparently realizes that his “Cap and Trade” bill (see this column “The Death to America Act” — 6/29/09) is in deep, deep trouble, possibly dead on Capitol Hill. If you think I exaggerate, please read the column just referenced, and recall that this legislation if enacted would cost American families thousands of dollars. Yes, emphatically including Americans who make well under the president’s $250,000 — his solemnly promised demarcation where those with lower earnings would see no tax increase. (What’s more, administration officials admit this among themselves — confident that you would never know until it’s a done deal. More on this below.)

Meanwhile, his other top priority — the so-called “health care” bill — is not doing all that well either. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has been told by his Democrat colleagues in “the world’s most deliberative body” that “You don’t want this vote, Harry. I’m not making threats or promises, but you don’t want this vote.”

And Christopher Horner — Senior Fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute — adds that these same worried senators have told the White House, “You can have my vote on Health Care or you can have my vote on [Cap and Trade], but you can’t expect me to walk that plank twice. Make your call.”

So where does that leave us?

The Capitol Hill spotlight at the moment is on Health Care, and some believe the White House may be ready to throw Cap and Tax — the Death to America Act — under the bus, in order to focus on the opportunity to take control of your health care decisions, including rationing for seniors who have been deemed to have ended their “useful lives.”

Obama and company intend to have both.

Oh, but surely that would cause a national uproar, wouldn’t it? Yes, it would, but this administration has shown itself willing to ride out popular outrage if the end result is advancing its ambitions for a Marxist America. His numbers are plummeting, but Obama and his acolytes are not without tricks up their sleeves, hoping to turn the public around in time for Obama’s re-election drive in 2012.

Bingo! By then, it’s not a stretch to project that virtually the entire Death to America Act can be swept into a de facto executive order with no input from Congress, possibly to the relief of those senators who are thinking, “You don’t want to have this vote, Harry.”

Bingo! The Bama gets both

Meanwhile, the big fight continues in the Halls of Congress over health care. Obama will continue to twist arms, and if unable to persuade enough lawmakers to “go along,” well, there’s always the Continuing Resolution. The CR is the method whereby Congress, unable to pass all or some of its spending bills on time, rolls them into one piece of legislation that keeps the government departments operating at the levels of the just-concluded fiscal year until such time as the current year’s bills can be pushed through Congress and signed by the president.

It is also a vehicle by which, theoretically, the backers of the monstrous “health care” bill can include it as part of the CR. They can then dare the opponents to “allow a shutdown of the government,” including the withholding of Grandma’s Social Security check.

Voila! The president gets both Health Care and Cap and Tax — the latter by government fiat, the former by arm-twisting or through CR. And the lawmakers who did not want to be caught dead voting for both get their desired cover.

If a conservative Republican tried to pull that off, the media would brand him a sneaky dictator. Let a Marxist socialist try it, and wow! — isn’t he a genius?

They admit it

In an interview with this column, Horner says the administration privately admits “what economists — left and right — have have said — that it is a non-transparent energy tax.”

Horner says it “would indeed cause great harm to our manufacturing industry, singling out steel, cement, glass, paper, and ceramics as well. Those jobs would leave the country as would industry to countries not subject to our stringent environmental laws.”

Wrenching truth from bureaucrats

Ferreting out the documents from the Treasury Department put Horner’s persistence to the ultimate test:

‘Transparency’? Forget it.

“I believe the administration was playing games here,” Horner alleges. “They’re doing the opposite of being transparent, and desperately trying to shield — in violation of the law — highly embarrassing [to them] and politically damaging documents…. And that may be just the tip of the iceberg.”

That in itself is huge. As it was, the bill barely squeaked through the House by an ultra-slim margin. It doesn’t take much buyer’s remorse than that to kill the measure if it ever makes it back to the House floor for a second vote after Senate-House negotiators have ironed out differences. And as senators have indicated to majority leader Reid, they don’t want to touch it. Too hot to handle even with the Democrats’ 60-40 majority.

Horner continues: “They then saw the unredacted version of these documents…revealing the administration sees even more harm than they were first willing to admit — that this was the equivalent of the total corporate income tax — and other embarrassing and damning internal admissions they won’t say publicly.”

Hello Barry. I’ve decided to write you a few questions in response to the unsolicited emails I keep getting from BarackObama.com. Since most of your form emails concern health care I’ll confine most of my questions to one health-related subject: Abortion.

1. Did you know that about 150 young black people were admitted to Howard University School of Law this year? But, unfortunately, about 1370 black babies were aborted today. How can we effect “social justice” if the health profession kills far more blacks than the legal profession is currently accepting into its ranks?

2. Isn’t abortion sort of like liberalism in a nutshell? It’s just a way of asking others to suffer the consequences of your own bad decisions.

4. You been supported by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) throughout your political career. What if I trapped a dog in a cage and dismembered him slowly with a pruning tool I stuck through the bars of the cage? What if I then sucked out the bloody body parts with my Black & Decker power vacuum? Would PETA demand my arrest? Would they succeed? Would this not be eerily similar to what licensed doctors do to babies? Isn’t that more serious than animal abuse? Even more serious than ACORN funding brothels with tax-payer dollars? Is this a procedure we want to nationalize?

6. Jesse Jackson was pro-life before he decided to run for president. He switched to the “pro-choice” position because he wanted to be the first black president. This, he thought, would show that America is no longer racist. Jesse still opposes the death penalty because – at least he claims – it is racist. In the American health care system, over 9000 black babies are aborted every week. Has the criminal justice system ever executed 9000 innocent blacks in a single week?

7. A Democrat historian once told me that, during its history, the mostly Democratic KKK lynched almost 5000 blacks. Today, the mostly Democratic pro-choice movement applauds (and even defends as a “right”) the mutilation of over 9000 blacks on a weekly basis. You probably think it is unfair to compare pro-choicers to the KKK. But unfair to whom? Klansmen were never such prolific killers.

10. I just ran into a fellow who was wearing a “Jesus” fish around his neck and an “Obama” hat on his head. That’s like wearing a Star of David around your neck and carving a swastika on your forehead. Jesus was the greatest friend of the weak and powerless. Are you not the most powerful opponent of the weakest segment of society, the unborn?

11. Social Security is going bankrupt because large numbers of people born before Roe v. Wade are drawing from the system. But 50 million people who would be paying into the system have been aborted since Roe. Is it fair to say that in the same way Democrats destroy lives they created they also destroy government programs they created?

The military general credited for capturing Saddam Hussein and killing the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq says he has only spoken to President Obama once since taking command of Afghanistan.

“I’ve talked to the president, since I’ve been here, once on a VTC [video teleconferece],” General Stanley McChrystal told CBS reporter David Martin in a television interview that aired Sunday.

“You’ve talked to him once in 70 days?” Mr. Martin followed up.

“That is correct,” the general replied.

This revelation comes amid the explosive publication of an classified report written by the general that said the war in Afghanistan “will likely result in failure” of more troops are not added next year. Yet, the debate over health care reform continues to dominate Washington’s political discussions.

Former U.S. Ambassador for the United Nations John Bolton said this was indicative of President Obama’s misplaced priorities.

“I think it’s very clear, and has been during last year’s campaign and in the eight months the president has been in office that he just doesn’t regard foreign policy and national security as important as domestic issues, like reforming the health care system,” Mr. Bolton told the hosts of the Washington Times’ American Morning News Monday morning.

He went on, “If you think there are no threats then it’s not illogical to pay no attention to the rest of the world. The problem is in his [Obama’s] basic reading of the international environment where we do continue to face massive threats for international terrorists and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, among others.”

The health care plan advocated by President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, Senator Reid and The Democratic Majority is hazardous to the health of every American. What the President would like to do with your health care is currently being widely debated, but what is lesser known is a panel has already been created in Part I of his two-part health care plan  through buried language in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, also known as the Stimulus Bill, which became law last February.

The name given to this panel in the President’s Stimulus Bill is The Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research, and is an already funded $1.1 billion enterprise run by federal bureaucrats—not practicing doctors on the front line or patients.  All 15 members of The Council have already been appointed by President Obama.  The two part Plan consists of 53 boards and councils, whose underlying method of cutting costs is based on rationing and denying care, not preventing health care need, much like the British Health Care System.

Part II of the Obama health care plan, dubbed “America’s Affordable Health Choices Act,” empowers this Council to create another level of bureaucracy, The Center for Comparative Effectiveness Research, which as in The British System, will determine whether to approve or reject treatment for patients based upon the cost of treatment and the number of years the patient will likely benefit from the treatment.  This will have the biggest impact on seniors, but rightly has caused concern for Americans of all ages.

Part I of the President’s plan dictates that doctors and hospitals will be overseen and reviewed by The National Coordinator of Health Information Technology.  This “Coordinator”, who has already been appointed by President Obama, will be responsible for monitoring treatments to ensure doctors and hospitals strictly follow what the government deems appropriate and cost effective, and to “guide medical decisions at the time and place of care.”  

The language buried in the Stimulus Bill goes on to say that hospitals and doctors that are not “meaningful users” of the new systems will face penalties.   The Secretary of Health and Human Services will be empowered to impose “more stringent measures of meaningful use over time.” According to those in Congress, penalties could include large six figure financial fines and possible imprisonment, even if the treatment was successful.

Section 102 of the Obama health care plan has the Orwellian title, “Protecting the Choice to Keep Current Coverage.”   What this section really mandates is that it is illegal for you to keep your private insurance if your status changes, e.g., if you lose or change your job, become a senior citizen, or graduate from college and land a job.

Section 123 of Part two of the Obama health care plan, establishes a Health Benefits Advisory Committee to “recommend covered benefits.” In Section 142 of the plan, a Health Choices Commissioner is established to “be responsible for the establishment of health benefits.” So according to the bill, this “Committee” recommends what benefits the public are offered and The Commissioner enforces their decision.  Essentially, the people receiving or providing the care have no input in the process.

One of the more troubling elements is found in Section 1233 which involves the federal government creating “end of life counseling sessions” in order to “reduce” health care costs.  End of life matters are important and sensitive and should be addressed with great care.  The federal government should not be involved with such matters to save money, and “end of life sessions” should not be included in a government rationing program.

The Administration and its supporters are not misguided in thinking reform is needed. But their two-part approach is a dangerous one that denies Americans the choice of what doctors they see, what care they receive, where they receive it, and how they pay for it.  Health Savings Accounts are the one solution that unlocks the shackles that HMOs, some insurance companies and big government bureaucrats have placed on every person, family and business.  Personal Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) already demonstrate an ability to change the system for the better. HSAs put the people back in charge of their own health care and give them incentives to make healthier choices about how they live.

Health Savings Accounts, coupled with prevention-related interventions are the keys to reducing health care costs for every person, family and business. Prevention of health care need is the most efficient and ethical means of cutting health care costs. It is a far more effective and compassionate way of reducing costs than manipulating health care “need” by reducing access and availability of care through rationing. 

The goal should be to make health care available and affordable. When I became a physician, I took an oath to “do no harm.” I decided to add to that oath to “prevent harm.” Through prevention initiatives and Health Savings Accounts, we have an opportunity to bring health care freedom to every person, family and business.  But we can only do this by defeating America’s Affordable Health Choices Act and start anew the debate for healthcare reform.

Luke 9: 46-50

An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest. Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.” Then John said in reply, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow in our company.” Jesus said to him, “Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”

1. Me-first Syndrome Listening wasn´t the disciples´ strong suit. How could it be? If they had truly paid attention to the Master, they should have known that the Good News wasn´t about striving for prestige and recognition. It was about humility and service. We can only wonder why Jesus´ words didn´t sink in for his disciples. Yet, are we much better? We hear or read the same Gospel passages year after year, yet we still fall into sins of pride. We might think ourselves better or smarter or holier than the rest. But how does Christ see us?

2. The Corrupter Jesus explains in what greatness consists: the acceptance of the weakest and most defenseless, in his name. This requires a humble heart. God gives us certain powers that he hopes will be used for good purposes. The history of mankind seethes with tales of people exploiting one another at every opportunity. Examples abound: ethnic groups that exploit minorities, employers who take advantage of poor immigrants, the road-rager who cuts off people in traffic. “Power corrupts,” says the ancient adage. Indeed it does. How do I treat the people over whom I have authority? Am I like a dictator? Do I always want to show them “who´s the boss”? Or is my attitude one of service?

3. Zealously Jealous John explains that he and the other disciples tried to stop someone who was doing good in Jesus´ name. The person´s crime was that he didn´t follow “in our company.” Christians have derailed more than a few good works over the centuries because they thought themselves appointed by God to police the Church. The Holy Spirit raises up all kinds of new works which need to be serenely discerned, not systematically squelched simply because they are new. “By their fruits you will know them,” Jesus says (see Matthew 7:16). The lesson Our Lord wants to give is: Don´t be so quick to judge others´ motives. Give them the benefit of the doubt, and wait to see what their work produces. Is there anyone I´m keeping from doing good?

Conversation with Christ: Give me the grace to see people and actions through your eyes. Let me bring my standards in line with yours. Let me learn to look at a person´s heart rather than his appearance. And above all, give me the wisdom never to stand in the way of people doing good for your Church.

Resolution: I will do an act of charity for the pro-life movement or for a children´s group.

St. Wenceslaus was Duke of Bohemia, who after many trials in governing and evangelizing his people, suffered martyrdom at the hands of his brother.

In the 17th century (1633-1637) St. Lawrence Ruiz and his companions shed their blood for Christ in Nagasaki, Japan. These martyrs were members of the Order of St. Dominic. They were nine priests, two religious, two sisters, and three laymen. Among the latter was Lawrence Ruiz, a family man from the Philippines. They abundantly sowed the missionary seed of Christianity with the example of their life and death.

Historically today is the feast of St. John of Dukla who was born in Dukla, Poland in 1414. He joined the Friars Minor Conventual, a religious order who strictly adhered to their rule of poverty and obedience. Though he went blind later in age he was able to prepare sermons with the help of an aide. His preaching was credited in bringing people back to the Church in his province. Soon after his death, there was an immediate at his tomb and several miracles were attributed to him. On June 10, 1997, he was canonized by Pope John Paul II in a mass at Krosno, Poland before approximately one million people.

St. Wenceslaus, duke of Bohemia, was born about the year 907 at Prague, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). His father was killed in battle when he was young, leaving the kingdom to be ruled by his pagan mother. Wenceslaus was educated by his grandmother, Ludmilla, also a saint. She taught him to be a Christian and to be a good king. She was killed by pagan nobles before she saw him king, but she left him with a deep committment to the Christian faith.

Throughout his life he preserved his virginity unblemished. As duke he was a father to his subjects, generous toward orphans, widows, and the poor. On his own shoulders he frequently carried wood to the houses of the needy. He often attended the funerals of the poor, ransomed captives, and visited those suffering in prison. He was filled with a deep reverence toward the clergy; with his own hands he sowed the wheat for making altar breads and pressed the grapes for the wine used in the Mass. During winter he would visit the churches barefoot through snow and ice, frequently leaving behind bloody footprints.

Wenceslaus was eighteen years old when he succeeded his father to the throne. Without regard for the opposition, he worked in close cooperation with the Church to convert his pagan country. He ended the persecution of Christians, built churches and brought back exiled priests. As king he gave an example of a devout life and of great Christian charity, with his people calling him “Good King” of Bohemia.

His brother Boleslaus, however, turned to paganism. One day he invited Wenceslaus to his house for a banquet. The next morning, on September 28, 929, as Wenceslaus was on the way to Mass, Boleslaus struck him down at the door of the church. Before he died, Wenceslaus forgave his brother and asked God’s mercy for his soul. Although he was killed for political reasons, he is listed as a martyr since the dispute arose over his faith. This king, martyred at the age of twenty-two, is the national hero and patron of the Czech Republic. He is the first Slav to be canonized.
