It’s Not All Good
What sex education in the schools promotes should be called multisexualism. Multiculturalism teaches that all cultures and religions are equally worthy of respect except Christianity and whiteness. Multisexualism teaches that all sexual behaviours and lifestyles are of equal social worth, except those that refuse to detach morality from sexuality.

Sex education in the schools isn’t new. As John Moore pointed out in his Post column yesterday (“Hide your kids. The liberals are coming”), Ontario’s more graphic additions, hastily rescinded to accommodate Christian and Muslim critics, were mere “tweakings” to a well-entrenched model.
Taken for granted in Moore’s column was the notion that early sex education – tweaked or untweaked – was a good idea to begin with.
Unless countered by vigorous instruction at home, no children in the last several decades have left school believing their sexuality has a higher purpose than giving them bodily pleasure. From adolescence they have been encouraged by sex educators – no, pressured – to maximize sexual pleasure (but with condoms!), and made to feel abnormal if they prefer chastity to sex without love or commitment. What’s so good about that?
John Moore scoffs at the idea that sex ed programs are designed by “activists,” but that’s only because he likes what they’re teaching. If he didn’t, he too would call them activists. Sex educators are pushing an ideology that is to sex what multiculturalism is to race. In fact what sex education in the schools promotes should be called multisexualism.
Multiculturalism teaches that all cultures and religions are equally worthy of respect except Christianity and whiteness. Multisexualism teaches that all sexual behaviours and lifestyles are of equal social worth, except those that refuse to detach morality from sexuality.
The multisexualist attitude is epitomized in the person of Dr. Brock Chisholm, a Canadian soldier and psychiatrist, who became the first director of the World Health Organization in 1946. A pioneering advocate for sex education in the schools, Chisholm thought that the greatest obstacle to children’s self-realization was the concept of “right and wrong.” From his perspective, sex education was necessary to overcome “the ways of elders – by force if necessary.” There’s a political name for that. Begins with T.
Human beings are the only creatures for whom shame, guilt and modesty (especially in girls) are instinctive. We are also the only creatures who assign certain behaviours to the realm of the private, and certain to the realm of the public.
Schools are by nature an artificial construct. They were designed to transmit objective knowledge about subjects that are amenable to collective learning: literacy, numeracy, history, scientific data and the arts.
Sexuality is different. When children of both sexes absorb information from a relative stranger about deeply private feelings and behaviours in a group environment – when the private is made public – they are being co-opted into a rudimentary form of collective voyeurism, which, even when earnestly accompanied by exhortations to responsibility (condoms!), is inherently titillating and a licence to breach natural modesty boundaries.
|
In her 1999 book, A Return to Modesty, Wendy Shalit recalls the results of sex education in her Grade 4 class, from which her mother asked she be excluded after the teacher insisted on explaining to the class what “69″ meant. Shalit says she was very happy to read in the library to escape the mortification she felt during such discussions, but noted that in the locker room after every sex ed class, the boys would unmercifully tease the girls with the knowledge they had picked up. ” “Erica, do you masturbate’? one boy would say to one poor pigtailed victim … ” It’s really natural, you know.’ ” What is instructive in the anecdote is that the boys never teased Shalit because she was presumed to be ignorant. Mystery between the sexes at that age facilitates the protective modesty and privacy nature intended.
If multisexualism was such a great idea, we should know it by its outcomes. Adults who’ve been through the multisexualist mill should be sexually happier, more well-adjusted, more fulfilled than the adults of my generation who learned only the basic mechanics of human reproduction in “hygiene” class (in singlesex groups). But although obsessed with voyeuristic sexual entertainment (sex ed, j’accuse), young adults today don’t seem any happier than those practising “family values.”
Strangely enough, it was the very same people that were not exposed to multisexualism who agreed as adults decades ago that the state had no business in the bedrooms of the nations. So the very lifestyles multisexualists are at such pains to glorify in the classroom today came about through the efforts of those who were not exposed to sexual education as we know it. Children need to learn to treat everyone with respect in word and behaviour in general. The state should have no place in the early, and unnatural, sexualization of children.

Responding Compassionately, Truthfully and Thoroughly, Part II
Fr. Roger J. Landry
The Anchor
Editorial
April 30, 2010
Last week, we examined the Pope’s meeting with Maltese victims of clergy sexual abuse as well as the comments of retired Vatican Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos about the relationship between bishops and priests and the responsibility bishops have not only to be spiritual fathers to clergy but to all God’s faithful. Today we take up another recent statement that made headlines, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone’s comments in Chile about the predominant homosexual nature of the sexual abuse by clergy. This is likewise relevant to the full response of the Church to the evil of the sexual abuse of minors within her fold.
When Cardinal Bertone was asked in Santiago on April 12 whether he believed there was a connection between celibacy and pedophilia, he set off a media firestorm when he replied, “Many psychologists and psychiatrists have shown that there is no link between celibacy and pedophilia, but many others have shown, and have told me recently, that there is a link between homosexuality and pedophilia.”
The firestorm was partially ascribable to terminological imprecision on the part of the journalist and the Cardinal: using the term “pedophilia” to refer in general to all cases of the sexual abuse of minors in the Church. Taken in a strict sense, pedophilia signifies sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children, and in this sense there is clearly no psychological link between those who have attractions to post-pubescent members of the same-sex and sexually-undeveloped children. But taking the question and answer in the way they were intended, Cardinal Bertone was saying that there is a clear and undeniable correlation between same-sex attractions and the incidence of clergy sexual abuse, one that no one who is sincerely interested in ridding the Church of the clerical sexual abuse of minors can ignore.
When the National Review Board for the Protection of Children and Young People published its probing report “The Crisis in the Catholic Church in the United States” in February 2004, it listed the most notable factors in the sex abuse crisis in the U.S. Catholic Church between 1950-2002. One of the most notable ones, it stated, concerned “issues relating to homosexual orientation.” The authors wrote, “The overwhelming majority of reported acts of sexual abuse of minors by members of the clergy victimized boys [ages 11-17]. Accordingly, the current crisis cannot be addressed without consideration of issues relating to homosexuality.… We do not seek to place the blame for the sexual abuse crisis on the presence of homosexual individuals in the priesthood as there are many chaste and holy homosexual priests who are faithful to their vows of celibacy. However, we must call attention to the homosexual behavior that characterized the vast majority of the cases of abuse observed in recent decades. That eighty-one percent of the reported victims of child sexual abuse by Catholic clergy were boys shows that the crisis was characterized by homosexual behavior.”
Some critics of that conclusion said that the fundamental reason why there more than four out of five abuse victims in the Church were boys was because priests seeking to abuse had disproportionate access to boys from 1950-2002. There were no altar girls for the vast majority of that time period, so the disproportion of male victims, they assert, is ascribable only to access rather than sexual attraction. Such a contention, however, makes the methodological error of pretending all clerical sexual abuse imitates pedophilia, which the majority of psychological experts say is gender non-specific.
It also seems to ignore the data. The National Review Board documented that 81 percent of the abuses cases were of boys, and of these, 78% of the reported victims were 11-17 when the abuse began. A February 2010 follow-up study of new credible allegations (mostly for abuse that happened years ago) by Georgetown’s Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate for the U.S. Bishops’ Conference confirmed the same clear trends: in 2005, 81 percent of abuse cases reported to the Church were male; in 2006, 80 percent; in 2007, 82 percent; in 2008, 84 percent; and in 2009, 84 percent. Only fifteen percent of these cases overall were for pre-pubescent children. At a world-wide level, Monsignor Charles Scicluna, the chief investigator of clerical sexual abuse for the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said in a recent interview that about sixty percent of the cases that have come to his office have involved sexual attraction towards adolescents of the same sex, thirty percent heterosexual attractions to adolescent females, and the remaining ten percent were cases of true pedophilia.
So those who are serious about ending the sexual abuse of minors in the Church need to confront the fact the overwhelming majority of cases involve same-sex molestation of post-pubescent boys. While it would be false to imply a causal relationship between same-sex attraction and the sexual abuse of minors— for same-sex attractions in a particular priest do not imply any greater likelihood to violate celibate chastity and abuse a young person than heterosexual attractions do — there is at the same time a profound need to examine this “crisis within the crisis” of the clerical same-sex molestation of teenage boys.
This has not yet been done. It has been avoided on the part of Church leaders, it seems, fundamentally out of a desire not to single out the preponderant homosexual dimension of the crisis and thereby unintentionally scapegoat all priests with same-sex attractions for the clergy sex abuse scandals. It has probably not occurred as well because the members of the secular media have not only not been clamoring for this problem to be confronted head on, but also would likely try to frame such an investigation falsely as a dodge. Many in the media are not interested in this investigation because it might endanger popular culture’s and their politically correct esteem for same-sex attractions and activity; furthermore, it might subvert the attempt by some critics to use the scandals to undermine priestly celibacy: how ludicrous is it, after all, to propose heterosexual marriages as the solution to the problem of the same-sex abuse of adolescents? But even though the hostile elements of secular media are not holding the Church’s feet to the fire to investigate and eliminate this problem, it is essential to the integrity of the Church’s response — and more importantly the protection of children — that the Church does so.
Soon after Benedict XVI became pope, he published a document whose production he had supervised for a decade, which was the beginning of an ecclesial response not only to this “crisis within a crisis.” It was also a reaction to a defective ecclesial clerical culture — soft on same-sex activity in general among priests — that in some ways abetted the abuse by weakening a repugnance against sexual sins among the clergy and by blunting pastoral clarity and vigilance with regard to disordered sexual inclinations. The 2005 document said, “The Church, while profoundly respecting the persons in question, cannot admit to the seminary or to holy orders those who practice homosexuality, present deep-seated homosexual tendencies, or support the so-called ‘gay lifestyle.’” This was a start to the Church’s addressing the issue of same-sex attractions and activity among the clergy, but it did not really get into the subject of what the factors might have been leading to the vast statistical preponderance of same-sex molestation of adolescents among clerical sexual abuse cases and why it was allowed to continue. That study still needs to be done.
Hopefully the recent attention given to Cardinal Bertone’s remarks as well as the renewed attention to the nature of sexual abuse in the Church will lead to this much overdue examination.
Home Schooling Works
By Wayne Allyn Root, NewsMax, April 29, 2010

This is the story that the teachers unions wish had never happened. This is the story that proves all their hysterical demands for more money are nothing but a sham.
This is the story that makes the unions and education bureaucrats sick to their stomachs. This is the personal story of my daughter Dakota Root.
In each of the books I’ve written, I’ve taken great care to acknowledge my beautiful and brilliant little girl, Dakota. I often noted that Dakota and her parents were aiming for her acceptance at either Harvard or Stanford and would accept nothing less.
The easy part is aiming for gold. The hard part is achieving it. Her “home-school to Harvard” story is about turning dreams into reality.
Dakota has been home-schooled since birth. While other kids spent their school days being indoctrinated to believe competition and winning are unimportant, and that others are to blame for their shortcomings and failures, Dakota was learning the value of work ethic, discipline, sacrifice, and personal responsibility.
While other kids were becoming experts at partying, Dakota and her dad debated current events at the dinner table. While other kids shopped and gossiped, Dakota was devouring books on science, math, history, literature, politics, and business.
I often traveled to business events and political speeches with my home-schooled daughter in tow. While other kids came home to empty homes, Dakota’s mom, dad, or both were there every day to share meals and a bedtime kiss and prayer.
While others were out learning to drive so they could attend more parties, Dakota was practicing the sport she loves — fencing — with dedication, intensity and passion.
The result? She became one of the elite junior fencers in America — winning the Pacific Coast Championship and representing the United States at the World Cup in Germany and Austria.
Was all the discipline and sacrifice worth it? A few days ago, Dakota Root achieved her lifelong dream. She was accepted at both Harvard and Stanford.
She also was accepted at Columbia, Penn, Brown, Duke, Chicago, Cal-Berkeley, USC, and several more of the elite schools in America, an unheard-of record for a home-schooled kid.
She actually had the confidence to turn down an offer from the Yale fencing coach before she had gotten her other acceptances.
Here is the most amazing part of the story: The first classroom of Dakota’s life will be inside the hallowed halls of Harvard. This fall she will fence for the Harvard team — one of America’s best.
Only an elite 1 percent (30,000) of the best of the best high school seniors dared apply to Harvard.
Out of 3 million high school seniors headed to college, and out those 30,000 applicants, only 1,500 or so will attend Harvard. That is the lowest acceptance rate in college history.
At a time of educational free fall, it is a remarkable story.
With America’s public school system ranked at or near the bottom of the industrialized world (and Nevada near the bottom of that), with record dropout rates, grade inflation, violence, gangs, drugs, teen pregnancies, and the scandal of graduating high school seniors requiring remedial math, and reading before starting at college, Dakota’s story offers hope.
Dakota proves the American dream is alive, if only we’d stop depending on government to save us.
There is no one answer for education; our choice of home schooling melded parental education with tutoring by handpicked retired teachers and college professors, combined with a personally chosen curriculum. It’s called parental freedom.
The power to decide how to educate children best belongs with the parents, not teachers unions. School choice, encouraging competition for our failing public school system, and offering vouchers on the state level to give parents the power (and money) to choose among charter schools, private schools, parochial schools or home schooling is the way to force public schools to improve.
Competition works. If it’s good enough for Coke and Pepsi, why not public schools?
The sad reality is that teachers unions and government aren’t the solution — they are the problem. Our public schools get worse every year, yet teachers unions demand more and more money.
They get their money, it gets worse yet, and they demand even MORE.
That is the definition of insanity. It isn’t working and hasn’t since the day that government took over education in this country.
Dakota Root proves it doesn’t take a state certified teacher, or a teachers union, or a village to raise a child — it only takes two loving parents who give a damn.
One home-schooled girl has driven a stake through the heart of the public school education sham. “Home-school to Harvard” is a powerful story that all parents should be allowed to offer their children.

Stand Up For Arizona

Conservatives must stand up for Arizona. And this is winnable. For by backing away from “immigration reform,” both Harry Reid and Obama are admitting, de facto, that America is with us, not with them.

Weep, Rachel! Baby Boy Aborted Alive and Left to Die
Jennifer Hartline, Catholic online, April 30, 2010

The manner of this child’s death is horrifying beyond belief, but it’s not the location of his death that makes it a homicide! He was the very same 22 week-old infant hours earlier when he was kicking and growing inside his mother’s womb! He was the very same human being the moment he died as the moment before he was aborted. That he died slowly, nearly two days after the abortion, only means he was clumsily murdered.

House Approves Puerto Rico Statehood Measure: 223-169
FOXNews.com, April 29, 2010

The House voted Thursday to allow Puerto Ricans to decide their own political future and relationship with the United States.
The House voted Thursday to allow Puerto Ricans to change the island’s commonwealth status, in what critics are saying is a backdoor attempt to force Puerto Ricans into choosing U.S. statehood — something Puerto Rican voters already have rejected three times.
The bill, which passed 223-169 and now must be taken up by the Senate, would introduce a two-step ballot measure for Puerto Rico to decide if its residents want to change their current relationship with the United States. If they vote to change their status, they can then choose to become a state, pursue independence, or seek some other “political association between sovereign nations.”
Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, said that while Puerto Rico doesn’t need congressional authorization to hold such a nonbinding vote, the bill could be a game-changer — part of a plan, he said, to give the island’s progressive activists “legitimacy” in a push toward statehood. Chaffetz suggested it was part of an effort to bring more Democrats into Congress.
“That’s what some of us who understand this bill are so just frightened about,” Chaffetz told radio and Fox News host Glenn Beck. “The majority of people in Puerto Rico don’t even necessarily want this.”
Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory at the end of the Spanish-American War. Those born on the island were granted U.S. citizenship in 1917 and Puerto Rico gained commonwealth status in 1952.
Today, Puerto Ricans serve in the military but can’t vote in presidential elections. They do not pay federal income tax on income earned on the island.
Proponents of the new measure say it gives citizens of the island the right to self-determination. Thursday’s action was nonbinding, and if Puerto Ricans eventually select statehood, Congress would still have to vote to admit the island to the union as the 51st state.
The issue divided Democrats and Republicans alike as liberal Democrats with ties to Puerto Rico teamed with conservative Republicans to oppose the measure.
Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., whose parents were born in Puerto Rico and who represents part of Chicago, slammed the bill on the House floor Thursday morning, calling it a device to “impose” statehood on residents who have repeatedly rejected the idea.
“Really it’s designed to get one thing and one thing only, and that is to have the people of Puerto Rico accept statehood for themselves,” he said. “Why don’t we accept their wishes? … It’s spelled the same in English as in Spanish: N-O. No. No.”
The divides were particularly stark among members of the House Republican leadership team. House Minority Leader John Boehner,R-Ohio, voted against the legislation. Meantime, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., and Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence, R-Ind., voted in favor.
Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuno (R) cobbled together more than 50 Republican sponsors in favor of the package.
But there was drama as the majority Democrats narrowly avoided an upset on the House floor.
Republicans attempted to add provisions to the legislation that would have made English the official language of a potential Puerto Rican state.
Republicans also tried to modify the bill by banning any infringement of the Second Amendment in Puerto Rico.
The Democratic majority defeated the GOP effort, 198-194.
Fox News’ John Brandt and Chad Pergram and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Army Preps for Tea Party ‘Terrorists’
By Mark Alexander, Patriot Post, April 29, 2010
(Patriot Post) Publisher’s Note: Regarding my essay, Army Preps for Tea Party ‘Terrorists,’ I was contacted by senior command staff at Ft. Knox on the afternoon of the date of publication. There was a security exercise at Ft. Knox this week, but an officer in the security loop altered the scenario “in order to make it more realistic.” Those alterations were described in my essay, exactly as they appeared. The command staff informed me that the alterations were not approved at the command level and that the individual who circulated the scenario through official channels will “receive appropriate counsel.” I was assured that the Command staff would not have authorized such a scenario.
“The duty imposed upon [the president] to take care, that the laws be faithfully executed, follows out the strong injunctions of his oath of office, that he will ‘preserve, protect, and defend the constitution.’ The great object of the executive department is to accomplish this purpose; and without it, be the form of government whatever it may, it will be utterly worthless for offence, or defence; for the redress of grievances, or the protection of rights; for the happiness, or good order, or safety of the people.” –Justice Joseph Story

A few months back, the commander in chief of our Armed Forces, that erstwhile community organizer Barack Hussein Obama, denigrated a large cross section of Americans who identify with the Tea Party movement — those who advocate for Essential Liberty and Rule of Law.
Obama identified them as malcontents, “waving their little tea bags.”
Since then, the Obama administration and their Leftmedia sycophants have endeavored to characterize Tea Party attendees as rude, radical, racist, redneck, enemies of the state. They have attempted to tie high-profile acts of violence against the government to the Tea Party, including the pilot who crashed his plane into a Texas IRS headquarters. (Turns out, he was a Leftwing nut.)
In fact, Americans who attend Tea Party rallies are from all walks of life, as noted in the Patriot Declaration, Patriots who are peacefully and constitutionally petitioning their government for redress.
As I noted in my tax-day essay, Tea Parties are “not a call for revolution but for restoration — a call to undertake whatever measures are dictated by prudence and necessity to restore constitutional Rule of Law.”
However, Obama’s words do have consequences.
This week, I was contacted by a number of civilian and military personnel (enlisted and officer ranks) who expressed concern about a military exercise scenario proposed for Ft. Knox, the U.S. Bullion Depository. (For the record, I called Ft. Knox security for an official comment and received the standard reply: “We are not authorized to discuss this exercise.”)
As with most such exercises, the Ft. Knox scenario outline occurred in stages, as if real time intelligence was being provided at various intervals. The first intel advisory I received was issued on Friday, 23 April 2010, and identifies the terrorist threat adversaries as “Local Militia Groups / Anti-Government Protesters / TEA Party.”
You read that right: “TEA Party”!
The advisory states that plans for a demonstration may have been interrupted by “Federal and local law enforcement” raids on a “White Supremacists Organization,” but “TEA Party organizers have stated that they will protest at the Gold Vault at a future date.”
Further, the intel advisory states, “Anti-Government – Health Care Protesters have stated that they would join the TEA Party as a sign of solidarity.”
In accordance with the exercise proposal, Ft. Knox post security is placed on high alert because, “these groups are armed, have combative training and some are former Military Snipers. Some may have explosives training / experience,” and “a rally at their compound / training area is scheduled.”
Another intel update was issued on Monday, 26 April 2010, noting that the “rally at the Militia compound occurred,” and “Viable threats … have been made.” The intel on the rally notes, “Many members were extremely agitated at what they referred to as Government intervention and over taxation in their lives. Alcohol use ‘fanned the flames.’ Many military grade firearms were openly carried. An ad hoc ‘shoot the government agent’ event was held with prizes (alcohol) given for the best shot placement.”
The report states further, “Components of bomb making are reported to have been on the site. Some members have criminal records relating to explosive and weapons violations.”
In response to the “immediate threat,” the exercise stipulates, “local detention centers are being made ready for mass arrests.” Both the “QRF I and QRF II” are placed on two hour recall, and the “5-15 CAV” was ordered to “draw weapons from holder and store in most available arms room,” and “coordinate with MASA for immediate ammunition draw; have equipment readied for immediate use, i.e. vehicles staged and loaded IAW 5-15 CAV SOP; LMR’s charged.”
QRF refers to Quick Reaction Force. QRF I is the 16th Cavalry Regiment. QRF II is the 194th Armored Brigade.
The 26 April order gives specific instructions for the 5-15 CAV (a 16th Cavalry battalion) to have weapons, ammo, vehicles and communications at ready, and it places the other 2,200 members of the units on two-hour recall. In other words, these orders are to gear up for defending Ft. Knox against Tea Party folks and their co-conspirators who oppose nationalization of our health care sector.
Now, for almost 30 years I have, on occasion, participated in the development and implementation of small and large scale military exercises within the U.S. and around the world.
Such exercises are critical to the readiness of our forces, and the standard for the real time intel reports in these drills requires thinly veiled references to assets of existing or collateral threat vectors, communist regimes such as China and terrorist networks such as al-Qa’ida, etc.
Perhaps the author of the Ft. Knox scenario should focus on a response plan for, say, an Islamic terrorist who attacks unarmed troops on his own post. (See Ft. Hood / Major Nidal Malik Hasan.)
While the Ft. Knox exercise scenario is amateurish in its construct (meaning it appears to be composed by someone with not much experience in such matters), the fact that it made it out into official channels sets an ominous political precedent.
The military officers and enlisted personnel with whom I spoke are all dedicated uniformed Patriots who are loyal, first and foremost, to their oath to “support and defend” our Constitution “against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

Their concerns about this exercise mirrored my own. As one put it, the scenario “misrepresents freedom loving Americans as drunken, violent racists — the opponents of Obama’s policies have been made the enemy of the U.S. Army.”
They were equally concerned that it appears the command staff at Ft. Knox had signed off on this exercise, noting, “it has been issued and owned by field grade officers who lead our battalions and brigades,” which is to say many Lieutenant Colonels saw this order before it was implemented.
It’s not likely that Ft. Knox Commanding General James Milano or Deputy Commander Col. David Teeples, or even the regimental and brigade commanders for the 16th Cav and 194th AB, actually read the exercise scenario, but that doesn’t absolve responsibility for such an egregious example of political agendas infiltrating military exercise scenarios.
One officer insisted, “The American people should require greater accountability of their commissioned officers, that they abide by their oath and never allow politically motivated propaganda like this exercise on any post or base again.”
Another observed, “Whether this is complacency by officers who do not see such orders as a problem, or worse, officers who recognize the problem but do not insist the orders are changed, this is a serious problem. We are discussing the training of American citizen soldiers in the use of potentially deadly force against a specific group of political dissenters. There is never a time in an officer’s career in which he does not have a duty to apply critical thought to the orders he is given and asked to give. It is my opinion that any officer that has allowed these orders to persist, to reach the level of junior officers and soldiers, has demonstrated a lack of judgment or apathy towards what his duty requires of him. Either way, we should demand more of the commissioned officers, who we as a nation empower to lead our sons and daughters into battle.”
Indeed, and at best, the blatant malfeasance on the part of the individuals who composed this exercise reflects poorly on the uniformed services.
The antidote to this patent misrepresentation of peaceable Patriots is to expose it with the Light of Truth. As our motto Veritas vos Liberabit affirms, the Truth shall set you Free!

GOSPEL & MEDITATION: Our Gaze Fixed on Christ the Life
Father Steven Reilly, LC
John 14:1-6
Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father´s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way.” Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Introductory Prayer: Father, how empty is the life that doesn’t know the joy of Jesus your Son. I have come to this prayer today to know you and your Son better, to love you more and to imitate your perfections. Thank you for this time of prayer.
Petition: Lord Jesus, grant me a greater intensity in my relationship with you, the Way, the Truth and the Life!
1. Follow Me, I Am the Way Remember the olden days, when you would stop in a gas station and ask directions? “Follow me” was the easiest way to give directions. Something like that is happening in the Gospel today. To Thomas’ question, “How can we know the way?” Jesus gives himself as the answer. We know the way with infallible precision. A personal and passionate relationship with Christ is the sure way through this confusing world. Let us keep our relationship with Jesus always on our spiritual GPS. Whenever we have a doubt, we should ask ourselves, “How would Jesus act in this situation? What is the path he would follow?”
2. Believe in Me, I Am the Truth Jesus gives his followers a truth so rock solid, that nothing can shake them. Just as he is the Way, he is also the Truth. “There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved” (Acts 4:12). With the Truth of Jesus, we have the answer to basically any question we need to ask. What a comfort it is to have Jesus as the Truth in this world of jaded souls and in this climate of relativism.
3. Come to Me, I Am the Life “He’s the life of the party” is a compliment of high regard in certain circles. He’s the spark plug, the guarantee for an entertaining evening. If he’s not there, a deflated feeling hangs in the air and everybody wonders if there isn’t a better way to be spending their time. A life lived with Jesus is never dull. He is the “Life” of more than just a party. The Christian with an intense relationship with Christ is completely fulfilled — he is never bored, nor is he boring.
Conversation with Christ: Lord, you are the Way, the Truth and the Life. I thank you for giving me the great grace of my Catholic faith. Help me to share with others the immense joy of this personal relationship you have given me.
Resolution: I will speak to someone today about having a personal relationship with Christ.

TODAY’S SAINT: ST. PIUS V, POPE
CATHOLIC NEWS AGENCY, APRIL 30, 2010
Born Michele Ghisleri, at Bosco, near Alexandria, Lombardy, 17 Jan., 1504, elected pope, 7 Jan., 1566; died 1 May, 1572.
Michele Ghislieri was born of poor parents of noble lineage and was a shepherd until the age of 14 when he encountered two Dominicans who recognized his intelligence and virtue. He joined the Dominicans, was ordained a priest at 24, and taught philosophy and theology for 16 years during which he was elected prior of many houses. He was known for his austere penances, his long hours of prayer and fasting, and the holiness of his speech.
He was elected Bishop of Sutri in 1556, and served as an inquisitor in Milan and Lombardi, and then as inquisitor general of the Church and a cardinal in 1557. He was known in this capacity as an able, yet unflinching man who rigorously fought heresy and corruption wherever he encountered it.
He was elected pope in 1566, with the influential backing of his friend St. Charles Borromeo, and took the name Pius V. He immediately put into action his vast program of reform by getting rid of many of the extravagant luxuries then prevalent in his court. He gave the money usually invested in these luxuries to the poor whom he personally cared for, washing their feet, consoling those near death, and tending to lepers and the very sick. He spent long hours before the Blessed Sacrament despite his heavy workload. Continue reading

The fact is… women without children achieve, on average, more in their career lives because they spend more time at work than those with children to raise.
[To prove her point, Erbe said of her friend]… with an Ivy League degree and a promising career… [she] flushed her chance at real world success down the drain and became a willing slave to her children.

Pope Benedict has quietly set in motion a Great Reform of The Church
Freedom vs. ‘Rights’?
By Charles Colson, Catholic Exchange, April 29, 2010
Last December, the D.C. City Council legalized same-sex “marriage.” It insisted that all city contractors honor this redefinition of marriage. The Council refused to make exceptions for faith-based ministries like Catholic Charities, which provides many services to the poor.
The Archdiocese of Washington, to its everlasting credit, announced that it would walk away from its foster care program rather that place children with same-sex couples. It also announced that, rather than offer spousal health benefits to same-sex couples, it would no longer provide spousal benefits at all to future employees.
Spokeswoman Mary Ann Walsh said that providing health benefits to same-sex couples would be tantamount to “recognizing same-sex ‘marriage’ as legitimate”—something the church can’t do.
The Catholic Church has been down this road before. A few years ago in Boston, Catholic Charities was forced out of the adoption business because it refused to place children with same-sex couples. And it’s a road faithful Protestants are traveling as well—as a Methodist camp found out in New Jersey, when it lost its tax exemption for refusing to allow a same-sex couple to be married there.
Why is this going on? Because the sexual revolution of the 1960s has transformed not only our culture, but the political landscape and our laws as well.
My colleague, historian Glenn Sunshine, explains why in a great article you can find at ColsonCenter.org. The sexual revolution, he writes, was an outgrowth of the teachings of Sigmund Freud, who believed that mankind’s problems were the result of repressing sexual desires. So our redemption, Freud said, could be found in sexual liberation.
Sunshine writes, “The implication of his theory was clear…to enable people to live happy, fulfilled lives, society needed to drop restraints on sexual activity.”
And that is exactly what our culture has been doing for five decades. Sunshine notes that since happiness is “fundamentally about sexual expression, the freedom to express whatever you think of as your sexual identity [has become] our most essential human right.”
This is why the Supreme Court has in recent decades struck down laws against sodomy and contraception, and upheld abortion laws. The Court follows the culture. That is why it has not only been upholding the right to sexual expression; it has done its best to eliminate any kind of challenges to that expression.
We recently had an ominous sign of where this kind of thinking leads. Chai Feldblum, commissioner on the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, said that, when homosexual rights crash up against religious beliefs, she has “a hard time coming up with any case in which religious liberty should win.” This despite the fact that the First Amendment explicitly guarantees religious liberty!
Clearly, the great danger to the church is that the right to sexual expression is now considered foremost. All other freedoms are trampled beneath it.
As I say in my Two Minute Warning video this week, which you can also find at ColsonCenter.org, we Christians are not free to retreat from the culture—to stick to our church potlucks and ignore everything going on outside the church doors. No, we can’t.
If we do not engage the culture and make a stand for our first freedom—freedom of religion—we may one day find those church doors being nailed shut.

Puerto Rican Statehood Ahead? It Could Happen Today! Call Your Congressman
….Congressmen, voting for HR 2499 are like sheep being led to slaughter. They’ll say the people of Puerto Rico have a right to vote for themselves. They’ll vote yes. The progressives will then present a false choice to the people…..
FNC
I want to talk to you about the fundamental transformation of America. It could happen (Thursday).
But first, you have to understand progressives. What is it that progressives believe?
• Big government, power and control: It’s not about Democrats or Republicans, people. It’s power and control. You can’t choose for yourself. You’re too dumb, so progressives will choose and regulate everything for you
• Democratic elections: This is important to progressives. You’ll hear it “democratically elected” to refer to leaders like Hitler, Chavez and Castro — all democratically elected
• Social justice: Collective redemption through the government: Call it socialism, Marxism, whatever — it’s all about the redistribution of wealth
Now, I want to talk to you about Puerto Rico. Understand: This is not about Hispanics. It’s not about freedom. It’s about power and control.
Puerto Rico is a self-governing commonwealth, but is subject to U.S. jurisdiction and sovereignty. It’s been a U.S. territory since after the Spanish-American War of 1898. They’re not an independent country. It’s similar to Guam, the Virgin Islands and American Samoa. Some people like it, others don’t; they get to enjoy many of the benefits of America — like protection — and they don’t have to pay any taxes. That’s a pretty sweet deal.
So it’s no wonder “the people” have consistently voted against becoming America’s 51st state; three times since 1967 — the latest in 1998. It’s always been the same question: Do you want to be a state?
Now, let’s take you to Washington, where there’s important vote happening: HR 2499 — it’s called “The Puerto Rico Democracy Act.” Gosh darn it, who could be against that? The bill is a non-binding resolution, supposedly to support Puerto Rico’s “self-determination” on if they want to be a state or not.
That’s so cute. Wait, I thought they already had a right to vote? They do. So I’m left with the question: Why do they need a non-binding resolution to support their self-determination? Is there something going on that I’m not aware of that is so important that we need to take attention away from the economy or immigration?
We’ve asked some of the Republicans in Congress who are supporting this bill and here are some of the answers:
“This is a vote about freedom.”
“This vote does not grant Puerto Rico statehood, it simply gives Puerto Ricans the right to determine if statehood is something they want for themselves.”
See, I thought they already had that. Three times they voted on that. It’s almost like something else is going on. But remember, they keep telling me it’s “non-binding.”
If I just trusted progressives. With progressives, democratic elections always comes with a trick. For instance, Hitler was democratically elected. But as the chancellor, not the furor. Whether it be through parliamentary tricks or corruption, it’s important to progressives to have the appearance of “the republic.” Remember: They went through the democratic process for health care.
So what’s the trick?
HR 2499 — if it passes — would force a yes or no vote in Puerto Rico on whether Puerto Rico should maintain the “current status” of the island. Wait, that’s not a vote on statehood. That’s a vote on do you want to “maintain the status quo.”
Let me ask you this: Do you want to maintain the status quo of America? ACORN’s Bertha Lewis would agree with me and say no, I don’t want our current direction. But we would disagree on the reasons why.
See the trick?
In the past, statehood fails because some people like the status quo, some want to be a state and some want to be independent. There are too many choices, too many options. They need to unite people. Do you want to maintain the status quo unites them, not on the answer but on the question.
See, the folks that like the status quo are more likely to vote for statehood than independence.
In 1998, there were five options on the ballot: Limited self-government; free association; statehood; sovereignty and none of the above. Which one won? None of the above.
But now, the vote is going to happen in two stages. The first stage: Do you want to maintain the status quo? Then a chair is removed. The second vote leaves you with three choices: statehood; full independence or modified commonwealth.
Remember, full independence and modified commonwealth historically get less than 3 percent of the vote. So those options will be the only thing standing in the way of Puerto Rico becoming a state.
But Glenn, it’s non-binding. Big deal!
True, but here’s where if you don’t know history, you are destined to repeat it. Let me introduce something to you called the Tennessee Plan. (This is probably going to sound like a conspiracy theory, but I have one thing the conspiracy theories never have.)
OK — so the Tennessee Plan, you’ve probably never heard of it unless you are from Tennessee or Alaska. Apparently, some of those who took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution haven’t heard of it either. When Tennessee first came to the Union, it had a different name; it was first called “Territory of the United States South of the River Ohio.” It was a U.S. territory, just like Puerto Rico is now.
But instead of waiting for Congress to decide if they wanted to make the territory a state, they took a different, bold route: They forced the issue themselves:
• They elected delegates for Congress
• They voted on statehood
• They drafted a state constitution
• And applied for statehood
• Then, when Congress dragged their feet, they went to the Capitol and demanded to be seated
Congress was unsure of how to proceed; this was the first territory going for statehood. They relented and Tennessee became America’s 16th state. Alaska did many of the same things.
Again, the Tennessee plan in a nutshell:
• Unsuccessfully petitioning Congress for admission
• Drafting a state constitution without prior congressional intervention
• Holding state elections for state officers, U.S. senators and representatives
• In some cases, sending the entire congressional delegation to Washington to demand statehood and claim their seats
• Finally, Congress has little choice but to admit a new state through the passage of a simple act of admission
Congressmen, voting for HR 2499 are like sheep being led to slaughter. They’ll say the people of Puerto Rico have a right to vote for themselves. They’ll vote yes. The progressives will then present a false choice to the people. Instead of saying “do you want to be a state?”it’s “Do you want the status quo?” If voters vote no, the next vote removes the status quo from the ballot, leaving statehood against two far less popular options. They’ll vote yes for statehood. Then they’ll elect their congressman and senators, they’ll demand to be seated and a 51st star will be attached to the flag.
How could this happen? Look at the immigration debate. What are Arizona and Texas being called? Racists. Anyone opposing Puerto Rico as state 51 would be called a hatemonger. Why do you hate Puerto Ricans so much? Why do you hate freedom?
This is not about Hispanics or freedom or sovereignty. It’s about power and control. If progressives convince Hispanics that everyone besides progressives are racist, you’ll have their vote for 60 years. But it’s more than that.
Why are Democrats and Republicans for this? Because it’s not about Republicans and Democrats. The progressives in our country know that this is the moment they’ve been waiting for; every Marxist daydream they’ve ever had, now is their time to get it done. They are not going to let it pass.
That’s what’s happening: The fundamental transformation of America. And this is only the beginning.
I told that this sounds like a conspiracy theory. But who is orchestrating this effort in Puerto Rico? Lo and behold, the New Progressive Party; from their own party platform:
“The New Progressive Party adopts the Tennessee Plan as an additional strategy for the decolonization and the claim for the admission of Puerto Rico as the 51st State of the United States of America.”
And: “This shall be done through legislation which will establish a process for the adoption and ratification of the Constitution of the State of Puerto Rico, and the election of two senators and six federal congresspersons to appear before Congress in Washington D.C. to claim their seats and the admission of Puerto Rico as the 51st State of the United States of America.”
They’re going to paint this as a vote for freedom, but Puerto Rico has already voted and they’ve already spoken. When they send the delegates to Washington, if you stand against this you’ll be labeled a racist.

Pope hopes English translation of Missal will be ‘springboard for a renewal’
CNA/EWTN News, Apr 28, 2010

The Pope met over lunch today with members and consultors of Vox Clara, which he recognized for its role of advising and assisting the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in completing the English translations of liturgical texts.
After thanking all who have contributed to the process, the Holy Father expressed his satisfaction at the news that the Roman Missal’s new English translation would “soon” be published. He welcomed the announcement because “the texts you have worked so hard to prepare” will soon “be proclaimed in the liturgy that is celebrated across the anglophone world.”
However, he continued, with its publication comes the “new task” of preparing the clergy and lay faithful for the reception of the changes. Though this task is not specifically within the scope of Vox Clara operations, the Pope observed, “in one way or another will involve all of you.”
Noting the difficulty many will have in adapting to the modifications that are said to be more literal translations from Latin, the Pope emphasized the need for a gradual introduction with “due sensitivity,” accompanied by catechesis.
He prayed that “in this way any risk of confusion or bewilderment will be averted, and the change will serve instead as a springboard for a renewal and a deepening of Eucharistic devotion all over the English-speaking world.”
Anticipating the transition, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has created a section on its website dedicated to the coming change, which will be expanded upon the new Missal’s release.
The USCCB calls for the implementation process to “be a time of deepening, nurturing, and celebrating our faith through our worship and the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy.”
The Pope closed his address at the lunch by underlining his gratitude to the contributors and telling them that “soon the fruits of your labors will be made available to English-speaking congregations everywhere.”
The new English translation of the Roman Missal, completed but awaiting the full approval of the bishops, is the third such edition, the last being released in 1975. Vox Clara has been working on this project for the last eight years.

Pope: There is No Charity Without Life in Christ
April 28, 2010 — At the general audience held in St Peter’s Square this morning, before more than 16,000 faithful, Benedict XVI presented the figures of two holy priests in connection with the city of Turin, where he will visit this Sunday.St. Leonardo Murialdo and St. Giuseppe Benito Cottolengo were priests in the nineteenth century.Benedict XVI: “They lived their ministry in the total gift of their lives to the poorest, most needy, the neglected, always finding the deep roots, the inexhaustible source of these actions in their relationship with God, drawing from His love, in the profound conviction that it is not possible to exercise charity without living in Christ and the Church.” Benedict XVI recalled that, now a …
GOSPEL & MEDITATION: A Life of Service
Father Todd Belardi, LC
John 13:16-20
When Jesus had washed the disciples´ feet, he said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it. I am not speaking of all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But so that the scripture might be fulfilled, The one who ate my food has raised his heel against me. From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I AM. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
Introductory Prayer: Lord, I believe that you are God. I believe that you became man, suffered, died, rose from the dead and ascended in heaven. I believe that you sent us the Holy Spirit to guide us along our earthly journey towards your heavenly Kingdom. Thank you for your infinite, unconditional love. Thank you for showing me the way. I place all my trust in you and yearn to love you more each day.
Petition: Lord Jesus, make me prefer to serve rather than be served.
1. The Teacher The disciples called Jesus “Master” during his lifetime. Many others did too –– and rightfully so –– because Jesus is the Master. The third time St. Peter saw the Lord after the Resurrection, he confessed: “Lord, you know everything” (John 21:17). And even if it meant accepting difficult growth lessons in life, St. Peter was able to accept humbly that Christ truly was Master, that he does know all. In contemplating Christ, we must try to remember who it is who is speaking, acting, working miracles, suffering, working and instructing. It is God, the Master of all: a man like us, yes, but also God, holding the keys to all things.
2. The Disciple The master became a slave. God served men. We can only bow in humble adoration knowing that our all-powerful God came to earth to serve us. Time and time again Christ gives his disciples an example of their own mission: to serve others. Love God by serving others; live like Jesus by humbly submitting to God’s will. This is the essence of Christianity: to live a life of humble service with all people, especially with those we find it most difficult to serve. One word captures it: charity.
3. The Blessing Christ invites us to serve. Being a servant to others is not easy, because it means we have to be humble. It was not easy for Christ either, but he had a motivation: to love and save us. Serving is a blessing –– even in those situations when our passions flare up and we would like to justify ourselves –– because we can love. Love transforms our world; it transforms hearts and allows the grace of God to touch the depths of the soul. If we have love for souls as our motivation to serve, every opportunity we have to live as servants becomes a blessing, a blessing to live like the Master who came to serve and not be served and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Conversation with Christ: Lord Jesus, help me this day to imitate you as a humble servant of all. Inflame my heart with a great zeal for souls so that in every moment I may desire to bring your love to others.
Resolution: I will do a concrete act of charity today for someone in need.
