To a great extent the level of any civilization is the level of its womanhood. When a man loves a woman, he has to become worthy of her. The higher her virtue, the more noble her character, the more devoted she is to truth, justice, goodness, the more a man has to aspire to be worthy of her. The history of civilization could actually be written in terms of the level of its women. — – Archbishop Fulton Sheen

PSALM 51–A Pure Heart is what seems to be missing in so many quarters of the Church today.

Psalm 51 is one of the most beautiful of all the psalms.  It’s about repentance and a pure heart – a theme that needs to be taken up by everyone in the Church these days.  Please watch this Vortex episode and pass it along to friends and family.

Planned Parenthood Gives Award to Pro-Abortion “Catholic” Speaker Nancy Pelosi

By Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com Editor, July 16, 2010

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — At a Planned Parenthood gala on Capitol Hill Thursday evening, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was treated like a rock star by the abortion business. Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards presented Pelosi with an award in front of an event featuring 300 college and high school students cheering her.

The large abortion business gave Pelosi its “Champion of Women’s Health” award and also recognized pro-abortion Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan.

The award comes even though Pelosi has been repeatedly at odds with the Catholic Church, in which she claims membership, over the issue of abortion.

The students came to Washington to lobby members of Congress to implement the health care bill, which contains massive funding of abortions.

During her acceptance speech, according to Politico, Pelosi recalled the process of getting the controversial legislation through the House.

“We had some pretty dark days,” she said. “Sometimes it didn’t look as if we’d be able to pass the bill. And sometimes people in the press said to me, this looks pretty desperate. How on earth are you going to pass this bill?”

“And I said well, we’re going to pass it. And we’re going to go up to the gate and we’re going to push open the gate. And if the gate is locked, we’re going to climb over the fence. And if the fence is too high, we’re going to pole vault in. And if that doesn’t work we’re going to helicopter in. We’re going to parachute in. But we’re going to pass this obstacle,” Pelosi explained…….

Obama Admin Authorized Abortion Funding in Third State Under Health Care Law

By Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com Editor, July 16, 2010

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Add Maryland to the list of states, including Pennsylvania and New Mexico, where the Obama administration authorized federal taxpayer funding of abortions under high risk insurance programs created under the new national health care plan President Barack Obama signed.

The National Right to Life Committee, which blew the lid off of the abortion funding programs in the other two states, informed LifeNews.com today that Obama officials authorized funding in a third state.

“It looks like you can add Maryland to the list of states that were on the way to providing federally funded abortion coverage in the new federal Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP), at least until NRLC blew the whistle on the issue earlier this week,” NRLC legislative director Douglas Johnson told LifeNews.com today.

Johnson refers to a July 7 press release in which Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley announced the creation of the Maryland Health Insurance Plan (MHIP), administering a new program in the state…….

Ex-Lesbian Janet Boynes Tells Moving Story of Conversion

By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman, July 16, 2010, LifeSiteNews.com

Former lesbian Janet Boynes says that her homosexuality began as it does for many women: as a response to sexual and psychological abuse she suffered as a child.
She was raised by one of her mother’s boyfriends, an alcoholic who abused her mother, who in turn showed Boynes little affection. At 12 she was molested by a relative, then an altar boy at her church.  She began to suffer an aversion to men, and found that her own sex was more appealing.  She also began using drugs.

“I was starting to become more attracted to women,” Boynes told CBN in a recent interview. “So many men had hurt me that these women, I thought, were a lot more like me.”

Her pain was covered over by a false masculinity that made her into a school bully, she says, and already in school people began to ask her if she was a lesbian – an idea she avoided until her 20s, when her loneliness led her to her first sexual encounter with a woman.Full Story

Catholics insist that there is a Natural Law, ‘present in the heart of each man and established by reason.’

By Deacon Keith Fournier, 7/17/2010, Catholic Online (www.catholic.org)

The E-Mail was sent on behalf of an anonymous student: “Teaching a student about the tenets of a religion is one thing. Declaring that homosexual acts violate the natural laws of man is another.” This is PRECISELY the Catholic claim! Homosexual sexual acts violate the Natural Law.

Dr. Alveda King Keeps the Dream Alive: Freedom Ride. Stop the New Slavery of Abortion

By Deacon Keith Fournier, 7/17/2010, Catholic Online (www.catholic.org)

The utilitarian notion that a human person can be treated as property, used instrumentally rather than received as a gift, was at the rotted core of the evil of institutional slavery. It is the poison behind its cancerous sister, racism and the lie behind the evil abortion movement which refuses to recognize the Rights of our youngest neighbors in the womb. Thank God, Dr. Alveda King is pointing out that truth and taking on the lies of the new slavery of abortion on demand.  Full Story Below

Dr. Alveda King will soon lead an historic recreation of the great Freedom Rides dedicated to freedom for all, including our youngest neighbors, the “least of these”, children in the first home of the whole human race, the womb.

WASHINGTON, DC (Catholic Online) – Dr. Alveda King is the Director of African American outreach for Priests for Life. She is the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I had the privilege of being with Dr. King recently when she visited Southeastern Virginia. I was honored to be the Emcee at two showings of the extraordinary film “MAAFA 21 – Black genocide in 21st century America” produced by one of the longtime heroes of the Human Rights struggle of our age, Mark Crutcher, of Life Dynamics.

I also have a solidarity in service connection with her through my role as the Associate Director of Deacons for life, under the leadership of that champion of the “least of these”, Fr. Frank Pavone. Dr. Alveda King is a warm hearted, dedicated, sacrificial, prophetic and extremely gifted leader. She is also a tremendously orator. I believe that she is an anointed leader for the new human and civil rights movement of our age, the effort to restore the Right to Life to our youngest neighbors, children in the womb.

As we have noticed, there is a concerted effort to unjustly paint all participants in that loose coalition that has come to be called the “Tea Party Movement” as racists. Clearly, this is one more example of the growing polarization in our Nation and the horrid lack of respect for people’s reputations. I was pleased to see Dr. King issue the following statement in response:

“We all need to examine and repent of our own tolerance for discrimination,” said Dr. King, “but to condemn an entire group because of a few people, yet support Planned Parenthood, an organization marinated in racism, is to strain out gnats and swallow a camel.”

“The most obvious practitioner of racism in the United States today is Planned Parenthood, an organization founded by the eugenicist Margaret Sanger and recently documented as ready to accept money to eliminate black babies,” added Dr. King.

“The most positive step we can take to fight racism is to end the hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies given to an organization that fulfills the dreams of the Ku Klux Klan — a group Planned Parenthood’s founder once addressed.”

This kind of courageous and prophetic willingness to speak the truth, no matter what the cost, must be genetic. Her uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a hero of mine. His writings inspired a young hippie (me, back then) who had wandered far from his Catholic Christian roots, to reconsider the claims of Jesus Christ. I will forever be grateful to Dr. Martin Luther King for his heroic life and martyrs death. In some respects, that wonderful Protestant minister is responsible for my return to the Catholic faith as a young man. Continue reading

US Bishops Welcome HHS Statement on Abortion Coverage, Express Grave Concern

Catholic News Agency, July 16, 2010

Washington D.C. (CNA/EWTN News) – Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, the chairman of the U.S. Catholic bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, welcomed a statement from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that declared federal funds will not be used to cover elective abortions in the new high-risk insurance pools that are beginning to be implemented in some states. At the same time, he said that the U.S. bishops were “gravely concerned” that some states had  planned to cover elective abortions with federal money.

Earlier this week, New Mexico and Pennsylvania rolled out Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plans (PCIP) programs which drew on federal funds to subsidize insurance plans for those who did not have insurance because of pre-existing conditions.

Cardinal DiNardo explained in his statement that the program introduced in Pennsylvania, “while purporting not to fund ‘elective’ abortions, made clear in its text that all abortions that satisfy the requirements of certain Pennsylvania statutes (i.e., all abortions that are not illegal in that state) would be covered, and reimbursed, with a combination of private premiums and federal funds drawn from the U.S. Treasury.” Continue reading

The Quiet Healer

Matthew 12: 14-21

The Pharisees went out and took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. When Jesus realized this, he withdrew from that place. Many people followed him, and he cured them all, but he warned them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what had been spoken through Isaiah the prophet: “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved in whom I delight; I shall place my spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not contend or cry out, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory. And in his name the Gentiles will hope.”

Introductory Prayer: God our Father, you gave us your Son to make us your children. I believe, and I am hoping to be raised to full maturity in him through the school of the Gospel. Thank you for your unconditional love. I offer you my love in return, knowing you welcome it as a parent does a small child.

Petition: Jesus, like you, make my heart attentive to the needs of others.

1. When Jesus Realized This, He Withdrew from That Place There is a great lesson for us here: It is not yet his “hour,” so Jesus does not force the issue. Jesus does not taunt the Pharisees or provoke an unnecessary clash. Whenever Jesus challenges a person it is in order to lead that person to a deeper self-reflection and ultimately to a conversion of heart and of life. He did this on several occasions with the same Scribes and Pharisees. Yet this is not the time to engage them intellectually; their hearts are closed and they are unwilling to listen. When at times we find ourselves in a disagreement (perhaps even with a loved one), once the emotions are roused and it becomes clear that one or both parties are not ready for the truth, the prudent, loving and humble thing to do is withdraw from the situation until the moment our hearts are more open to listening.

2. The Master Physician Matthew´s comment in this section of the Gospel is quite revealing: “Many people followed him, and he cured them all.” We must not imagine that all of the healings were physical. So “meek and humble” is Jesus that every person felt he could approach him. If a bruised reed comes to Jesus – a person battered by life, trials and his own sin – his first and only inclination is to heal that soul. Even to this very day Jesus continually takes what is broken and makes it whole. He is the master physician who binds up wounds so that the person may be healed. In light of this attitude we recognize the contrast between the Pharisees, who seek to kill, and Jesus, who continues to give life to all who come to him.

3. A Ember of Faith All Jesus needs is the slightest ember of faith and hope to change a person´s life. For instance, we cannot force a person to love us or to trust us. Likewise, God himself respects the very freedom he entrusted to us. Nonetheless, our Lord does give the human person a searching mind and heart. That is why we can say that the human person is religious by nature from the beginning. Atheists are not born; they are made by their choices. Within the human soul God already provides us with the kindling for faith, hope and love. Once we are baptized, that kindling can become an unquenchable fire. Yet it can also be extinguished if we carelessly expose it to the winds and waves of unbridled selfishness, secularism, skepticism and systematic doubt . No matter how far we think we may have drifted, if we will simply turn to Jesus, we will find that he is already looking at us.

Conversation with Christ: Lord Jesus, you see and know what I am to become if I will keep close to you in faith, hope and love. Deepen within me the desire to remain united to you in prayer so as to imitate you in love. Help me become with you what I can never become without you. Mother Most Pure, make my heart only for Jesus.

Resolution: Today I will contact someone who needs to be encouraged and listened to.

TODAY’S SAINT: SERVANT OF GOD FRANCIS GARCES AND COMPANIONS

CATHOLIC NEWS AGENCY, JULY 17, 2010

A contemporary of the American Revolution and of Blessed Junipero Serra, Francisco Garcés was born in 1738 in Spain, where he joined the Franciscans.

After ordination in 1763, he was sent to Mexico. Five years later he was assigned to San Xavier del Bac near Tucson, one of several missions the Jesuits had founded in Arizona and New Mexico before being expelled in 1767 from all territories controlled by the Catholic king of Spain. In Arizona, Francisco worked among the Papago, Yuma, Pima and Apache Native Americans. His missionary travels took him to the Grand Canyon and to California.

Friar Francisco Palou, a contemporary, writes that Father Garcés was greatly loved by the indigenous peoples, among whom he lived unharmed for a long time. They regularly gave him food and referred to him as “Viva Jesus,” which was the greeting he taught them to use.

For the sake of their indigenous converts, the Spanish missionaries wanted to organize settlements away from the Spanish soldiers and colonists. But the commandant in Mexico insisted that two new missions on the Colorado River, Misión San Pedro y San Pablo and Misión La Purísima Concepción, be mixed settlements.

A revolt among the Yumas against the Spanish left Friars Juan Diaz and Matias Moreno dead at Misión San Pedro y San Pablo. Friars Francisco Garcés and Juan Barreneche were killed at Misión La Purísima Concepción (the site of Fort Yuma).
