South Carolina lawmakers are moving to provide genuine health care for women.

Gov. Henry McMaster used a line item veto to eliminate nearly $16 million in family planning funds that would go to groups that also perform abortions.

Holly Gatling of South Carolina Citizens for Life says the governor’s decision is not an attempt to stop family planning in the state.

“It is a move,” she says, “to try to stop any kind of government funding going to any organization, such as Planned Parenthood, that does abortions because abortion is not health care.”

Gov. McMaster is asking the state health department to request a waiver from the federal Health and Human Services so that the funds can be earmarked for local health clinics that work with patients for family planning – but not for abortion services.
