Romney Expects to Pull Conservative Support in A Two-Man Race

....Asked about Giuliani's expected endorsement of John McCain, Romney said it's not surprising that "as a more progressive member of the Republican Party," Giuliani "felt more comfortable with a guy who after all was endorsed by the New York Times."....

It's now a two-person race, former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney told Fox News Wednesday morning, after Sen. John McCain won Tuesday's Republican primary in Florida. "In a two-person race, I like my chances."

Romney said from this point forward, people will have to decide if they want to John McCain to be the party's nominee -- "or do they want to vote for me, who does his best to bring together the Republican coalition that Ronald Reagan built."

Romney said he thinks he stands a good chance in a two-person contest -- and "we'll take that to 22 states and see if they agree." The Super Tuesday contest is on Feb. 5.

Romney noted that four Republican candidates ran hard in Florida. The next time, it will be different: With former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani expected to leave the race, and with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee having done "so poorly in Florida," Romney said he expects conservatives to rally around him, when faced with a choice between him and John McCain.

"In that case, there's a ceiling as to how many votes Sen. McCain will get. That's the hope," Romney said.

"All in all, I think it's becoming a real race between two people who have two different views about the future of this country," Romney said, noting that he never would have supported McCain-Feingold (campaign finance law) or McCain-Kennedy (immigration "amnesty" bill).

Asked about Giuliani's expected endorsement of John McCain, Romney said it's not surprising that "as a more progressive member of the Republican Party," Giuliani "felt more comfortable with a guy who after all was endorsed by the New York Times."

Huckabee is expected to remain in the race, but Romney said he thinks people now realize that a vote for Mike Huckabee is really a vote for John McCain.

Romney now plans to take his campaign to California, Colorado, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Maine, where "the narrowing of the field gives me a boost."
