Is Liberal Catholicism Dead?

....We actually need more Liberal Catholics. But Liberal Catholics like Dorothy Day, not Nancy Pelosi...Today Liberal Catholics hardly muster a word against abortion....

By Josh Mercer, FIDELIS, May 9th, 2008

That’s what Time magazine is asking http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1737323,00.html?imw=Y . There’s certainly been a lack of energy on the Catholic Left for at least a decade. Cardinal George famously called them out in 1997, saying: “Liberal Catholicism is an exhausted project.” http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-57231272.html No doubt, they still have all the major positions of power (think Georgetown University) so they’ll still be around for awhile.

But where Liberal Catholicism went wrong is focusing so much of its energies trying to get the Church to agree to all the precepts of the Sexual Revolution. But the Church thinks contraception has lead to promiscuity and the objectification of women. Most Liberal Catholics assume twisted or evil motives to the Pope and fellow bishops. They rarely disagree without animus.

To the extent Liberal Catholics focus on social justice: peace, poverty, capital punishment, torture, greed — there’s a definite place for their ideas and their contributions. We actually need more Liberal Catholics. But Liberal Catholics like Dorothy Day, not Nancy Pelosi.

Today Liberal Catholics hardly muster a word against abortion. If they do, like Pelosi or Ted Kennedy, they are on the wrong side. Forty million babies killed since 1973. What’s a greater evil than that?

Where are the strong pro-life Liberal Catholics in America today?
