Since President Donald Trump has ramped up his push for funding the border wall through a partial government shutdown, his approval rating among Hispanic American voters has unexpectantly climbed by 20 points.

Just over a month ago in early December, an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll revealed that Trump’s approval rating among Latino adults registered at just 31 percent.

Surprising ups and downs…

However, approximately one month into the president’s partial government shutdown over a lack of funding for his United States-Mexico border wall, the latest Marist poll released on Thursday shows a 20-percent boost in his popularity among Latinos, with more than half (51 percent) approving of his job performance.

In fact, as Trump continues to strengthen his case for a continuous wall spanning 2,000 miles of desert from California’s Pacific Coast to Texas’ Gulf Coast, his overall approval has surprisingly decreased a little bit among the general population … with the exception of Latinos.

“Remarkably, the poll indicated a jump in Latino approval at the same time the president’s overall approval among Americans dropped 7 points since December,” WND reported.

During this period of time, it appears that whites are becoming less patient with the president over the border issue.

“The data does suggest Trump could be losing ground with white American voters for the administration’s lack of progress on the issue of immigration,” Breitbart News noted from the poll. “Last month, about 50 percent of white voters said they approved of Trump. This month, only about 40 percent of white voters said they approved.”

The conservative news group also indicated that when looking at most of the demographics, only a slight change in his approval rating was registered since the shutdown commenced late last month.

“The poll revealed that since the start of the shutdown, Trump’s approval has barely changed among nearly all demographic groups,” Breitbart’s John Binder explained. “For example, Trump’s approval – since doubling down on obtaining border wall funding – with swing voters has hardly moved, with about 37 to 38 percent approving of the job he is doing between December 2018 and January 2019.”

The latest Trump approval poll conducted by Marist between January 10 and 13 asked voters, “Do you approve or disapprove of the job Donald Trump is doing as president? [And, would you say you strongly approve/disapprove of the job he is doing or just approve/disapprove?]”

Breaking down the results, 29 percent of Latino participants “strongly approve” of the president’s work, while 22 percent “approve” and 41 percent “strongly disapprove.”

Other polls show that Americans are becoming more supportive of Trump’s stance concerning the border wall and the other national security issues tied to his stance on immigration.

“This time last year, an ABC News/Washington Post poll found that only 34 percent of voters supported a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border,” Binder recounted. “Today, support for the wall has climbed to 42 percent overall. Most notable, about 40 percent of swing voters now say they support a border wall – a 10-percentage-point increase in support for the wall among swing voters since last year.”

Back-and-forth

As the partial government shutdown reaches the month mark, Republicans and Democrats continue to play the blame game.

“The battle over border security and the ongoing government shutdown continues in Washington, D.C. [as Americans weigh their approval – or disapproval – of the president’s performance in the Oval Office],” Townhall pointed out.

Trump stated his case for the partial government shutdown by reaffirming his tough-on-immigration stance in the name of national security to his more than 50-million social media followers last week.

“There are now 77 major or significant Walls built around the world, with 45 countries planning or building Walls,” Trump tweeted Wednesday. “Over 800 miles of Walls have been built in Europe since only 2015. They have all been recognized as close to 100-percent successful. Stop the crime at our Southern Border!”

Senate Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) made her take on who’s to blame for the partial government shutdown over the border wall clear a day later.

“It’s been 27 days since @realDonaldTrump forced the start of the #TrumpShutdown – and the Senate still hasn’t held a single vote to re-open government,” Pelosi tweeted Thursday. “Tune in as I speak with reporters.”
