Pro-Life Film ‘Unplanned’ Receives ‘R’ Rating

(CNSNews.com) — The pro-life film ‘Unplanned’ has received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for “some disturbing/bloody images,” leading the film’s directors to note that the rating reinforces the position that abortion is violence.

The directors of ‘Unplanned,’ Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman, told Movieguide that “UNPLANNED is an ‘R’ rated film which has no MPAA cautions for profanity, nudity, sex or violence … except for violence directly associated with the abortion process.”

“Ironically, the MPAA seems to be indirectly endorsing the pro-life position: namely that abortion is an act of violence,” the directors added.

An R rating, which stands for “Restricted,” indicates that children under 17 may not go see the movie without an accompanying adult.

According to Movieguide, which screens movies from a Christian perspective, the violence in ‘Unplanned’ is “low by Hollywood’s standards.” Movieguide noted that such movies as ‘Happy Death Day 2,’ ‘Miss Bala,’ and ‘Glass,’ all of which received PG-13 ratings, contain “killings, murders, and deaths.”

‘Unplanned,’ which is based on a book by the same name, tells the story of Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood clinic director who was involved in more than 22,000 abortions. One day, while Johnson was assisting in an ultrasound-guided abortion, she watched on the screen as a baby was aborted and found herself unable to continue her work at Planned Parenthood.

Johnson left the organization, became a pro-life speaker, and founded And Then There Were None, a nonprofit organization that supports abortion clinic workers as they leave the abortion industry.

Solomon and Konzelman said it was ironic that young women can legally obtain abortions in the United States but cannot go see ‘Unplanned,’ which depicts abortion, without a parent.

“But, maybe it’s all for the best,” they told Movieguide. “As the wife of our lead film attorney put it: ‘This is a movie that every mother of a teenage girl needs to take her daughter by the hand and go see with her.’ So as far as we’re concerned, ‘R’ means ‘Recommended.’”

‘Unplanned’ is set to hit theaters on March 29.
