(CNSNews.com) — House Representative Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) said the president “absolutely does” have a constitutional duty to enforce the immigration laws and added that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and her liberal colleagues “don’t mind people being hurt, raped, [or] killed if it helps them win their next election.”

At the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, CNSNews.com asked Rep. Gohmert, “Article 2, Section 3 of the Constitution says the president ‘shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed.’ Does the president have a constitutional duty to enforce the immigration laws?”

The congressman said, “Of course he does, absolutely he does. And he’s doing everything he can to try to do that. We just need a little help from the Democrats to make that happen as fully as it should. He’s doing everything he can.”

The congressman continued, “He’s looking at money. I was talking to him yesterday. He wants the laws enforced, he wants to do it humanely, he doesn’t want anybody to suffer. But he knows if we secure the border, we will not have in the civilian world what would be called an ‘attractive nuisance.’”

“For example, if you have a swimming pool or a pond there in an inhabited area and you don’t put up a fence around it,” said Gohmert, “and somebody goes in and drowns, then you are civilly liable to the errors of whoever dies, the family.”

“And I’ve been saying for some time the Democrats don’t understand that as long as they keep this attractive nuisance — people wanting to come and in their effort to get here they die, girls are raped — it is the responsibility of those in America who are not willing to secure our border, they would be civilly liable if they own this country,” said Gohmert.

“It’s important that something be done to stop people being lured to their death, or to their horrible assaults,” said Gohmert, who is a lawyer, a former district judge, and former chef justice of Texas’s 12 Court of Appeals.

CNSNews.com also asked Rep. Gohmert, “Do you think Speaker Pelosi is even interested in addressing the immigration issue?”

The congressman said,  “No, they’re interested in the political nature of trying to make people think that Republicans are mean-spirited and want people to be hurt, that we don’t care.

“So, once again, there’s projecting going on. They don’t mind people being hurt, raped, [or] killed if it helps them win the next election. Whereas we want to stop the attractive nuisance so people are no longer harmed trying to get here.”

A 2017 study by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) found that illegal immigrants cost the American taxpayer — on net — $116 billion a year.
