One pro-life group says the Trump administration is off to a good start with developing ideas to help pregnant women in rural America.
The Department of Health and Human Services, under the Trump administration, has awarded $9 million to launch the Rural Maternity and Obstetrics Management Strategies Program.
“The goal is to improve maternal healthcare, and that of course covers maternal and fetal health,” explains Laura Echevarria of the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC). “The earlier you get a woman under prenatal care, the better the outcome is for both her and her baby. And in rural areas it’s much more difficult for a woman to get that early care.”
Echevarria points out, though, that the program will initially will be funded for only New Mexico, Texas, and Missouri.
“The hope will be that they can successfully establish a pilot program, work out how it’s going to work in these communities and how it’s going to interact with other agencies and how it’s going to interact with private resources,” she details. “Once they do that, then they can expand that program in other areas of the U.S.”
But Echevarria says that pumping $9 million into a pilot program is an outstanding start to developing ways to deliver the services to rural women.
