Rome, 04.20.2023).- From May 9 to 14, 2023, Coptic Orthodox Patriarch Tawadros II will visit the city of Rome on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the first meeting between a Pope and a Coptic Patriarch. As reported by the I-MEDIA agency, the leader of some 10 million Coptic Orthodox Christians in Egypt will accompany the Pope in the audience on Wednesday May 10 and will also address those who are in Saint Peter’s Square on the occasion of the customary general audience of the Pontiff.

May 10 is considered by both the Catholic Church and the Coptic Orthodox Church as the “Coptic-Catholic Friendship Day”. It will not be the first time that a patriarch who is not in communion with the Pope is in an audience with the Pope (it happened in 2008 with the Armenian patriarch Kakerin II, although at that time only Benedict XVI spoke). …
