Curiously, each of the two competing etymologies of the Latin word adoratio is mapped to each aspect. One etymology, the more obvious, says that the word comes from ad –orare, “to pray to.” Obviously, if you pray to someone, supposing He Himself has the power to grant your request, whatever it is, you are therefore taking Him to be divine, and your “praying to” Him counts, as they say, as latria, that is, the worship owed to God alone.

The proud man can’t tolerate any criticism or opposition. Pride is the expansion of the self to the exclusion of others. As C.S. Lewis observes, pride is “essentially competitive.”... June’s Pride demands the surrender of any competing view of the human person... Humility! is not quite as effective a battle cry as Pride! Humility is hard to embrace because it always carries the stinging reminder of our created and fallen nature – that we neither create nor save ourselves. Pride presumes the power to define ourselves and to brush off the creaturely limits of male and female. In so doing, it closes itself off from – it becomes intolerant of – a Savior.

By Peter Pinedo, CNA - A “Pride Mass” took place in Washington, D.C.’s Holy Trinity Catholic Church Wednesday night despite calls for Cardinal Wilton Gregory to cancel it... About 250 people attended the third annual Pride Mass, organized by Holy Trinity’s LGBTQIA+ Ministry at the Jesuit-run church, located in D.C.’s Georgetown neighborhood... the celebrant, the parish’s pastor, Father Kevin Gillespie, SJ, the Mass was “an expression of our parish’s mission statement to accompany one another in Christ, celebrate God’s love, and transform lives.”
