We weren’t saints about it, we were parents. We’d be too hard, too soft, too talky, too quiet, too prayerful, and yet not witnessing enough. It felt like trying to maintain a sandcastle against the high tide of the world. It felt like the world would win and children would leave. As parents, it felt like the waves crashing over.

By Fr. Paul D. Scalia, The Catholic Thing - At the risk of seeming disrespectful or irreverent, I’d like to propose that the parable in today’s Gospel is, well,  funny. More to the point, it’s meant to be funny. Not “funny” in the sense of silly or trivial. Obviously, it contains a serious teaching about the foundational virtue of humility. But you can effectively deliver an important teaching in a funny way. And that’s what our Lord does in this Gospel.

It is almost as if “nature” is somebody’s name, and should start with a capital N. This is a measure of how afraid people are to speak about God. Our modern material culture is far more comfortable—at least in the short run—refusing to probe beyond the surface of things. It is easier to live in denial of ultimate reality.
