Since they are virtuous in other areas of their lives, and know the doctrine, can we say that they are all in error, because they do not feel, in conscience, that their relationships are sinful?"... he expressed his impatience with what he sees as an undue preoccupation with “sins below the waist.”... When Pope Francis questions traditional teachings—and mocks those who see the magisterium as a “monolith”—he undermines all teaching authority, including his own.

I experienced Catholic prayers and devotions in the family, received the sacraments often, and became a Mass server... However, looking back now, I see how I was merely following rules and customs of the Church that others exemplified to me. I embraced the ways of the faith simply because I just believed that was what devout Catholics did. In short, I never really owned my faith then. I never really asked myself why I should remain Catholic or what it even meant to be Catholic.

Indeed, the preparations for the Synod itself often highlight the problem by giving worldly participants an opportunity to advocate changes that undermine authentic Catholic renewal. Of course, in Church affairs there is often significant good behind the scenes which seems far too boring to report. But one thing has become clear through this synodal process: There is a great deal of confusion about what it means to renew the Catholic Church.
