It’s a question many are contemplating about President Joe Biden and other pro-abortion political leaders who profess to be devout Catholics.
Mike Stechschulte, writing at the Times Herald in Port Huron, Michigan, said it’s clear that many American Catholics do not understand their own faith, particularly when it comes to Communion, or the Eucharist.
He praised the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops for voting in June to create a document on Eucharistic coherence – “not, as so many have reported, to rebuke Biden, but to remind Catholics and others of the sacred nature of what — or, rather, Who — the Eucharist is.”

Stechschulte said Communion is a precious gift that Catholics believe is the body and blood of Christ.
“Communion is a gift — not a right — and it’s given so that we might examine our consciences before God, humbly repent of our sins, and return to Him before it’s too late,” he wrote.
He quoted a Bible verse from I Corinthians 11, which says: “Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord. A person should examine himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself.”
This is not just a message for Democrats or for people who support abortion; it applies to all sins and all people, no matter what their political party, Stechschulte said.
The problem is that Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other professing Catholics refuse to recognize that abortion is a sin or repent of their abortion advocacy, which affects not only themselves but millions of born and unborn Americans.
Right now, for example, they are trying to get rid of the Hyde Amendment and force taxpayers to fund abortions – an unprecedented change that would violate the right to life for countless unborn babies and the consciences of the vast majority of Americans.
Some bishops have said Biden is creating “scandal” for the Catholic Church by making it seem like it is ok for Catholics to promote the killing of unborn babies in abortions. Many bishops have said they are not trying to “weaponize” Communion by refusing it to pro-abortion politicians; rather, they are concerned for their souls.
Stechschulte said Communion is not and should not be a political issue, and public figures need to recognize that.
“The Catholic faith is, first and foremost, about Jesus. And no matter how many politicians suggest otherwise, Jesus can’t be found in a ballot box,” he wrote. “Christianity is difficult. Jesus claimed that his kingdom is ‘not of this world’ (John 18:36), and that we shouldn’t look for it here. The sooner we figure that out, the better off we’ll be.”
In other words, Catholics, including public figures, are called to do what is right even when it is difficult, and this includes defending the defenseless from conception to natural death. Those who do the opposite need to recognize that they are violating their faith.
