The leader of a pro-life organization thinks Congress can – and should – pass the federal “Heartbeat Bill” this week.

Janet Porter, president and founder of Faith2Action, says President Donald Trump supports H.R.490, Vice President Mike Pence “loves it,” Congress has 170 co-sponsors – and that it could actually pass by Friday.

“It’s remarkable to think about the fact that we could be ending nearly every abortion through Congress by the end of the week,” Porter tells OneNewsNow. Friday, January 19, is the 45th annual March for Life in Washington, DC. “It’s what we’ve been marching for for the last 45 years,” she adds, “and they know it’s within their power [and] within their means to do it.”

H.R.490 is sponsored by Republican Congressman Steve King of Iowa, who has said of the bill: “If a heartbeat is detected, the baby is protected.” Porter says pro-lifers are not going to be fooled by what she considers “fake” pro-life legislation that does little or nothing to protect children.

“The bill that they’re planning to pass at this moment [the Born Alive Abortion Survivor’s Protection Act] … would not prevent a single abortion,” she notes. “How about we protect the child before they attempt to kill [him or her]? How about we actually recognize that universal indicator of life – that heartbeat – and protect every child whose heartbeat can be detected? That’s what the Heartbeat Bill will do.”

According to a Barna poll last February, a majority of Americans (69%) – including Democrats – want the Heartbeat Bill to become law.

“I have never seen a bill that protects this many babies have this much public support – and it is within our means to pass it this week and we’re encouraging people to send free faxes,” she continues. “We’ve got it set up [on our website] so you can click one button [and] send faxes to Speaker Ryan, the members of leadership, and the chairman of the committee. We can bring this bill out this week.”

Porter recognizes it will take an “all out” effort to accomplish this real protection for the unborn – but she’s convinced it can be done through the sending of faxes and through fasting and prayer.
