WASHINGTON, DC – The women’s magazine “Cosmopolitan” pushed abortion on its readers again this week with a column arguing that the Democratic Party should not welcome people who think babies in the womb deserve a right to life.

In the column, Amy Irvin, executive director of the New Orleans Abortion Fund, said abortion is a fundamental “right” in the Democratic Party, and one that every candidate must support.

“Abortion is part of a continuum of reproductive health care, and health care is a human right,” Irvin wrote. “If Democrats want to maintain their claim to be the party that represents women’s interests, nothing less than a bold, united stance supporting reproductive rights and justice as a human right is acceptable.”

Irvin even criticized pro-abortion Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders because they said the party should not push away Democrats who are pro-life on abortion.

Democrats who support the party’s other issues but not abortion will never be acceptable in Irvin’s point of view. As an example, she pointed to Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, a pro-life Democrat who supports raising the minimum wage and ensuring women receive equal pay in the workforce.

Edwards also supports laws that protect unborn babies and their mothers from abortion. Since his election in 2016, Edwards has signed seven new abortion regulations into law – measures that Irvin claimed “shame and punish women” who abort their unborn babies.

Irvin continued:

Under Edwards’s leadership, Louisiana has been in a race to the bottom to make abortion a right in name alone — and it is poor women who are paying the price.

Certain Democratic leaders believe issues like abortion and access to reproductive care are distracting from what should be the party’s real focus: economics. But what this strategy fails to recognize is that for women, access to abortion drives their economics, and it is economics that often drives the need for abortion. If a woman is able to access an abortion, she is likely to be able to continue employment, continue earning an income. If a woman can’t access employment, she might not be able to afford raising a child and therefore seek an abortion. To ignore abortion in the debate about economic security and freedom ignores these cyclical realities and will only diminish Democratic enthusiasm among the party’s biggest voting bloc.

If economic issues were the real problem, Irvin should work to ensure women and their babies have the support they need so they do not have to feel like abortion is their only option.

But the truth is that economics are not the real issue. Abortion activists like Irvin will not accept anything short of a complete embrace of unregulated abortion for any reason up to birth, and they are pushing the Democratic Party to support it, too. Such a radical position is abhorrent to a majority of Americans, though abortion activists fail to see it.

Polls consistently show a majority of Americans oppose most abortions. They want unborn babies’ lives to be protected after the first trimester, and they do not want their tax dollars to pay for abortions. Most Americans think parents should be involved in a minor’s decision to have an abortion, and women should be fully informed of their options, the risks of abortion and fetal development before they make a final decision about abortion.

Abortion activists do not want any of this. And their radical agenda, embraced by the Democratic Party, is turning away voters. Democrats for Life estimates more than 23 million Democrats in the U.S. are pro-life. Last year, Pew Research found that 28 percent of Democrats say abortion should be illegal in most or all cases. Marist/KofC polling also found that 23 percent of Democrats consider themselves pro-life.

It’s time for Democratic Party leaders to wake up and realize that abortion activists have been misleading them. If they want to regain support, Democratic leaders must start embracing candidates who support protections for unborn babies once again.
