Richmond, Virginia – Virginia Democrats are standing by their nominee for attorney general, Jay Jones, even after revelations that he fantasized in text messages about shooting a Republican lawmaker and wishing harm on the politician’s children.

The disturbing messages, sent in August 2022 to former Republican Del. Carrie Coyner, surfaced amid Jones’ bid to unseat incumbent pro-life Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares in the 2025 election, with early voting underway as of September 19.

Jones, a former Democrat state delegate who resigned in 2021, had criticized Republican tributes to a deceased colleague and escalated into violent rhetoric targeting House Speaker Todd Gilbert. …
