On Wednesday, March 1, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., grilled Attorney General Merrick Garland over the Department of Justice (DOJ) apparent “anti-Catholic bias.”
“Not a single U.S. Bishop exhibited the zeal shown by Senator Hawley during his inquiry of Merrick Garland,” said Michael Hichborn, president of the Lepanto Institute. “Instead, the USCCB issued a milquetoast statement nearly a week after the story broke about the FBI targeting ‘radical-traditional Catholics.’ In my opinion, it was simply too little, too late.”
“The USCCB appears to have no problem in forcefully speaking-out on matters of immigration, disaster relief, and poverty programs – efforts which earn bishops millions in federal grants every year. But even basic defense of faithful Catholics against Merrick Garland’s Stasi-inspired tactics apparently isn’t profitable enough to merit a meaningful response.”
Church Militant’s Michael Voris recently issued an excellent analysis of Senator Hawley’s inquiry, joking posing the question of whether Hawley might be a candidate for pope.
