Little Hope for Pain Capable Bill in D.C.

President Donald Trump urged Congress this week to ban late-term abortion but one pro-life group cautions that call for action faces an uphill battle on Capitol Hill.

“I am asking Congress,” the president said during his State of the Union address, “to pass legislation to prohibit the late-term abortion of children who can feel pain in the mother’s womb.”

That plea came after New York legislators passed a controversial law allowing abortion up until birth,  action that angered pro-lifers across the country and also found room to be included in Trump’s primetime speech.

Trump in years past has publicly described himself as “pro-choice” but has said he no longer holds that view, and pro-life groups have witnessed his administration warm up to their cause after enduring eight years of the Obama administration.

Mallory Quigley of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List tells OneNewsNow the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act has been the groups “top legislative priority” for the last few years.

One obstacle, she says, is a 60-vote requirement for passage in the U.S. Senate. A second obstacle is the rabidly pro-abortion House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi.

“And now with Speaker Pelosi just dead-set on a pro-abortion agenda in the house,” says Quigley, “it’s an uphill battle for that legislation.”

The good news, she tells OneNewsNow, is that 20 states have passed similar legislation.

“And that’s building momentum eventually for us to pass this at the federal level,” she predicts, “and in the meantime to protect kids in the different states.”

President Trump also urged Congress to reaffirm a fundamental truth that all children, “born and unborn, are made in the holy image of God.”
