Some doctors are helping younger premature babies live, and one pro-life leader is hopeful it motivates other medical professionals to try.

The standard for premature babies is 24 weeks. Too often, however, babies born younger than that are left to die. OneNewsNow reported last week that a Texas girl born at 21 weeks is now three years old and healthy. St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas has successfully saved some premature babies as early as 21 weeks, although most don’t make it.

Carol Tobias of the National Right to Life Committee comments on the frequency of survival for premature babies.

“It is happening more and more often, which I think is wonderful,” she shares with OneNewsNow. “That is a testament to the doctors and nurses at hospitals and the care and the treatment that they are able to provide these little ones.”

The NRLC president asserts that this advancement “shows that these little ones are certainly human beings. They are people who should have that same right to life that you and I have.”

And the fact that some doctors are trying, she says, is encouraging for the future of saving preemies.

“We are seeing the treatments taking place much earlier than even just a couple of years ago people would have thought possible,” she observes. “So who knows? At some point in the future we may be able to help these babies survive at younger and younger ages.”

Some states ban abortions after 20 weeks. A national bill is being considered that would ban abortions if a heartbeat can be detected, which is usually just a few weeks into the pregnancy.
