Early monkeypox cases spread through close contact at “circuit parties” attended by gay men, but some media outlets, worried about homophobia, shied away from reporting the full truth.
The World Health Organization last week announced a global emergency over the rapid spread of the virus known as “monkeypox.” However, as columnist David Kaufman astutely observes a fear of offending the Rainbow Mafia led to media outlets reporting on the virus to attempt to avoid the proverbial elephant in the room.
In late May, Conde Nast’s LGBT site them.us went out of its way to distance a nascent viral scourge known as monkeypox from the main demographic who was catching it — gay men. ……
