(CNSNews.com) – The House intelligence committee on Thursday allowed all members of Congress to read a memo reportedly detailing FISA surveillance abuses by the U.S. government, and Republicans — shocked by what they’re seeing — are now pressing for the memo’s public release.
Although Republicans are sworn to secrecy, they are saying what little they can about the document:
“Sean, what I read today in that classified briefing room is as bad as I thought it was, and every single American citizen should have the ability to see that information to know exactly what our FBI was up to,” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) told Fox News’s Sean Hannity on Thursday night.
“Will it shock the conscience of the American people?” Hannity asked Jordan.
“Sean, it shocked me,” Jordan said. “I was like, wait a minute, this actually happened from our Justice Department and this FBI? That’s how serious this is. That’s why we’re calling on every bit of that information we got to see today to be made public for you to see, for journalists to see, most importantly, for the American people to see.”
Appearing with Jordan, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said after reviewing the intelligence information, “It’s abundantly clear that the entire Mueller investigation is a lie built on a foundation of corruption. And what is so important is that we get this information into the public square. The best disinfectant for this corruption is going to be sunshine, and that’s why Jim Jordan and I have joined many other members of Congress in calling for this information to be released for the review of all of the American people.”
Gaetz said he couldn’t reveal specific information, “but I can tell you I am as certain as ever that the claims we have been making are accurate claims — that there is intelligence information that backs it up. And that there has been a real attempt to undermine this president, and it has come from the scariest of places.
“Some of the very people we’ve been talking about will be exposed, and the key reason that all Americans need to see this memo is that it names names. It says who was involved with who. How different actors and characters we’ve heard about interacted with one another. And that is the type of information that we need all Americans to see immediately.”
Jordan said if a majority of the intelligence committee votes to release the documents, the executive branch will then get time to review them, and if the executive branch agrees, the documents will go public. “This could happen real quick,” Jordan said. “This should never happen in a country as great as the United States of America,” he added.
All Democrats on the House intelligence committee voted against allowing every member of Congress see the documents, “so you know they’re going to fight against release to the American people,” Gaetz said.
Gaetz also said he doubts this story will end with just firings. “I believe there are people who will go to jail.”
Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho.) told Fox News’s Laura Ingraham Thursday night that “people will be shocked” when they learn what happened in the highest reaches of law enforcement.
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) told Ingraham that releasing the memo to the public would not have any negative effect on national security:
“In fact, I think it’s just the opposite,” Biggs said. “I think the national interest is harmed by keeping it a secret from the public. We have to be transparent, we have to get this out there. It is so vital, so important. And I think Americans are going to be as outraged as I know Raul and I are, and many of my colleagues are who have read this. It has to get out, and I don’t believe we can hide behind the shield of national security interest because the problem is just flipped on its head. And you’ll notice, it was Democrats in that committee who don’t want it released.”
“I’ll tell you this,” Ingraham said on her Thursday night show:
If it turns out that our FBI has been compromised and that American citizens have been targeted for surveillance for purely political reasons or that the Obama Justice Department and maybe even some of the White House were in on it? Boy, do the people have a right to know! And they have a right to know now, not six weeks from now, and not six months from now.Remember, this dossier was a campaign generated document paid for by the Democrats. If it was used to justify spying on anyone associated with Donald Trump, heads should roll. It’s time to expose this entire circus to the sunlight. All of us should be able to trust federal law enforcement to be objective and not filled with some vengeful political hackdom.
