By Charlie Butts, OneNewsNow.com, June 19, 2017 – A recently published poll suggests Americans value the lives of preborn babies.
The annual Gallup Poll on abortion this year shows 50 percent of the American public believes abortion should be legal only under certain circumstances. And breaking that group down, only 13 percent say abortion should be legal in most circumstances while 36 percent say abortion should be legal in only a few circumstances.
Carol Tobias of the National Right to Life Committee tells OneNewsNow that overall, the indication is that people are less favorable toward allowing abortion.

“In addition to that, 54 percent of the people say abortion should be illegal or legal in only a few circumstances, compared to 42 percent who say abortion should be legal in all or most circumstances,” she explains. “So that’s a [considerable] gap there, with of course 54 percent on the pro-life side.”
She argues that could explain why many abortion supporters have been supportive of state laws to limit abortion.
“We have a split in the country,” she tells OneNewsNow. “Gallup asked if abortion is ‘morally acceptable’ or ‘morally wrong’ – and there ‘morally wrong’ is still coming out on top: 49 percent to 43 percent say abortion is not morally acceptable.”
In the 1990s, polls showed a majority in favor of abortion. Pro-life groups contend the change in perception is largely due to their major campaigns to educate the public on what abortion actually is: the ending of the life of a preborn human being.
The Gallup survey also showed the percentage of Democrats identifying as “pro-choice” (71%) is the highest since 2001. The same metric among independents dropped from 55 percent to 44 percent over the same time period, and slightly increased among Republicans (from 30% to 35%).
