Disney’s latest film is a colossal disaster by nearly every measure, as the company has lost the ability to tell good stories.

Back in 1937, Walt Disney, seeking to save his fledgling animation company, effectively went all in on a groundbreaking idea and cinematic masterpiece that launched Disney into worldwide fame. That film was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Disney spent what was at the time a massive sum — $1.5 million. He employed more than 700 artists who produced over two million paintings for the film.

When it was released in 1938, the film was an immediate success, earning $8 million globally and becoming the highest-grossing film of the year. For a brief time, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the highest-grossing film of all time, and adjusting for inflation, it remains the highest-grossing animated film of all time, tallying over $2.2 billion in box office sales thanks to subsequent re-releases.   ….
