There’s no lipstick garish enough to decorate this pig: Last night’s election was a wipeout for Republican candidates in almost every important race. It’s a wake-up call and a warning before next year’s midterm congressional contest. If the Democrats win that, kiss goodbye to the last two years of President Trump’s term in office, except as a lame duck subject to non-stop, farcical impeachment hearings.

What happened? All politics is local, so different factors decided the various races. But a common theme was this: Without Donald Trump on the ballot, Republicans seem unable to overcome the advantages Democrats baked into the system — from massive Third World immigration that transformed local electorates, and still-intact corruption in vote-counting software, to the deep divisions that still plague the GOP between diehard anti-Trump elitists and populists who follow his model. …
