Indefinite suspension of its sacramental life is never a legitimate option for the Church, any more than an indefinite fast from food and water is an option for the human body, the diktats of secular authorities notwithstanding.

“Of all the sad and surreal things to happen in the past few months,” writes Mary Wakefield in The Spectator, “the Catholic church’s decision to abandon the dying was, for me, the worst.” Wakefield goes on to explain just how incompatible she finds the COVID-related actions of Catholic and Anglican prelates with the sacramental faith they profess to hold.
