U.S. Vice President JD Vance has launched a scathing critique of the Vatican’s diplomatic leadership, accusing high-ranking officials of offering “trite platitudes” instead of moral clarity.
In his newly released memoir, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, Vance details a tense encounter with the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin. The confrontation, which took place in April 2025, centered on the Trump administration’s hardline immigration policies. Vance, a high-profile Catholic convert, writes that he was “unsettled” by the Church’s refusal to endorse a nation’s right to secure its borders, describing the experience as a turning point in his relationship with the institutional Church.
The dispute highlights a fundamental ideological rift between the current U.S. administration and the Holy See under Pope Francis. While the Vatican has consistently championed the rights of migrants and the moral obligation of wealthy nations to provide sanctuary, Vance argues that such a stance ignores the practicalities of national security and the rule of law. According to extracts published by The Washington Post, Vance felt that Cardinal Parolin’s focus on the “humane treatment” of migrants was a veiled criticism of the administration’s deportation strategies.
Vance’s memoir portrays him as a defender of “authentic” Catholicism, which he believes should prioritize the stability of Christian communities within sovereign borders over globalist humanitarianism. He expresses frustration that the Church, an institution with “moral authority and global perspective,” chose to speak in diplomatic riddles rather than addressing the complexities of the migration crisis head-on. This public airing of internal grievances is highly unusual for a sitting Vice President and signals a deepening rift within the American Catholic community.
The Catholic Church in the United States is currently one of the most politically polarized institutions in the country.
