British Catholics must hold firmly to the teaching of the Church that human life is sacred and inviolable, Cardinal Vincent Nichols has said in the wake of MPs narrowly backing an assisted suicide Bill.

Cardinal Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster and the president of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, said Catholics must also do whatever they could to persuade peers to reject the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill as it begins its way through the House of Lords.

He said the vote at Third Reading in the House of Commons, in which the Bill was passed by just 23 votes, was “a watershed moment in the history of our country”.

“It fundamentally changes society’s long held values and relationships on matters of life and death,” said Cardinal Nichols. …
