My dear friends in Christ,

There is a passage in Scripture that has troubled me for many years. It is a passage that becomes more unsettling the older I get and the more I watch the world around me.

Our Lord says: “For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders, insomuch as to deceive – if possible – even the elect” (Matthew 24:24).

Not sinners. Not unbelievers. Not those who have rejected God. The elect. Those who sincerely desire to follow Him. Those who pray. Those who go to church. Those who believe themselves faithful.

That warning should stop every one of us in our tracks. Because most of us assume that if deception comes, we will recognize it. We imagine that evil will look evil. We imagine that falsehood will announce itself as falsehood. We imagine that we would never be fooled. Yet history teaches otherwise. …
