Born from humble beginnings 10 years ago on the bayou, the annual Fête-Dieu du Têche crossed over to the mighty Mississippi River this year for a historic two-day Eucharistic procession that began on Aug. 13 in Baton Rouge and traveled 130 miles to New Orleans on Aug. 14. After a blessing in front of Jackson Square, Archbishop Gregory Aymond led a procession into the St. Louis Cathedral for a closing Mass.
Father Michael Champagne, founder of the Fête-Dieu du Têche and organizer of the Fête-Dieu du Mississippi, said, “We moved the Eucharistic boat procession for a one-time historic route to bless the river and the State of Louisiana.”
“My hope is for everyone to get back to the church, the Eucharist and to the Lord,” he said. “We are trying to reach out to everyone through this journey and encourage them to read the word of God.” …
