If you have a worldview that’s 1) internally incoherent, 2) hysterically moralistic, and 3) grounded in nothing but the current group preferences of the powerful, what can you do to enforce it on the masses? You can’t convince them rationally, so that’s off the table. You can try gaslighting them and manipulating their sentiments. That works pretty well sometimes, provided you dominate the means of communication. But pesky dissidents wielding stupid facts and tedious arguments will often burst your balloon.

No, the only way to force absolute nonsense into the brains of the millions is to follow the strategy of every tyrannical government, superstitious tribe, and thuggish crime family in history: you must employ force. You must censor opposing speech, punish those who flout you, and make hideous examples of the courageous and the stubborn. You must take as your motto the Ingsoc party’s maxim in George Orwell’s 1984: “A boot, crushing a human face, forever.” ….
