The Catholic Church in Germany is at a crossroads when it comes to migration.

For years, it has rightly championed the dignity of migrants and refugees, calling for compassion and solidarity. But as Germany faces an escalating migration crisis, it risks losing credibility due to a recent spat over a hardline migration bill.

The conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), alongside its Bavarian sister party, has been pushing for a tough stance on migration for some time – the complete antithesis of the position once held by former CDU leader Angela Merkel.
