His army managed to victoriously march and fight its way into Moscow, but the Russians’ harassing retreat and burning of the capital left the soldiers stranded and underfed. Their journey home in the Russian winter plus the tactical attacks on them starved, froze, and routed the French, permanently diminishing Bonaparte.
