Dear Archbishop Broglio,
I am writing to reiterate an earlier request that you remove Cardinal Edwin O’Brien’s name from the Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS) USA Headquarters and that you recommend that the U.S. Marine Corps remove Bishop Joseph Estabrook’s name from the chapel at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
As you know, as we discussed in the enclosed correspondence, Cardinal O’Brien grossly underreported the number of abuse cases to the John Jay Study; underreported the amount of money the archdiocese spent on abuse settlements; and covered up and lied about a number of predator priests including John “Matt” Lee. You also know that you lied in the enclosed correspondence writing that I simply “reported suspicions about Matt Lee’s probable homosexual orientation” to O’Brien when, in fact, my report addressed Lee’s homosexual predation which involved vulnerable enlisted personnel. Had O’Brien not covered up my May 6, 2002 report that he should have shared with Lee’s Ordinary, then-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, all the U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen and active duty personnel Lee harmed between 2002 and his arrest in 2007 could have been saved. O’Brien’s cover-up for Lee is similar to your own cover-up for Air Force Chaplain, Monsignor Brian Highfill, documented by New Orleans investigative news reporter, David Hammer, in his report, “Losing Faith: The Church Sex Abuse Scandal.”
When you delve into the archived correspondence between myself and O’Brien, you will also see how I reported then-Monsignor Joe Estabrook for covering up the sex abuse experienced by Chaplain Dianne Eller whose case is far more egregious than the April 2024 abuse scandal at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy that resulted in the removal of AMS Chaplain Daniel Mode. When the U.S. Navy Inspector General attempted to cover up what happened to Chaplain Eller, I appealed the matter to the Department of Defense Inspector General (DODIG) who supported my incriminating findings against Estabrook and Eller’s chain of command in Hawaii. I wrote the enclosed letter to the Veterans Administration that today would not be compensating Eller monthly had Estabrook not been found guilty of covering up her abuse.
Please let me know if you intend to comply with my request, otherwise Chaplain Eller and I intend to refer this matter to Secretary of Defense (SECDEF) Pete Hegseth who has already shown that he will not hesitate to investigate such behavior. The SECDEF might not be able to get you to remove O’Brien’s name from the AMS Headquarters, but he certainly can speak with the Commanding Officer of Marine Corps Base Hawaii and share with the media what happened in the cases of Lee and Eller. I believe an examination of your archdiocesan and military ordinariate archives may reveal that the AMS underreported and covered up more abuse than any diocese in the United States.
Sincerely in Christ,
Gene Thomas Gomulka

P.S. Insofar as I have not yet been laicized for speaking out against clerical sexual abuse, I was told that, canonically, I am still a priest/monsignor, although very different from Father Marko Rupnik or even Cardinal Roger Mahony whom I’m sure you would not address as Mr. Rupnik or Mr. Mahony.
