“The history of the Church is in part a history of the choice for a heroic life of self-offering,” says Fr. Donald Haggerty, author of The Hour of Testing. “It is possible that our own twenty-first century will find itself confronting this challenge in a unique manner.”

He explores the sufferings faced by the Church, and explains how our modern saints must embrace that suffering, accepting it with love the way Our Lord embraced his own cross. Are we currently in the Church’s ultimate “hour of testing”, or is that yet to come? We cannot say for sure, of course, but we can prayerfully prepare, offering ourselves and our lives for the good of the Church and the world. …
