Eliminating the ‘disorderly dependence on things’

The life of St. John of the Cross can be seen as an embodiment of the words of Jesus recorded in St. Mark’s gospel: “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”

The saint was born Juan de Yepes in 1542 in Spain, near the town of Ávila, into a poor family descended from Jewish converts to Catholicism. But the saint later chose the name John of the Cross in keeping with Mark’s Scripture and his desire to become one with Jesus and his suffering. He often preached, “Whenever anything disagreeable or displeasing happens to you, remember Christ crucified and be silent.” …
