St. Paul Miki and Companions – Patron Saint of Japan

St. Paul Miki and Companions are also known as the “Holy Martyrs of Nagasaki.” A generation after St. Francis Xavier brought Christianity to Japan, the faith had spread rapidly throughout the country. The Japanese emperor felt threatened, and had Catholics banished. Paul Miki and others worked underground, until they were captured. Paul Miki and his companions were martyred by crucifixion. They were the first martyrs of Japan and have been revered throughout Japanese history, especially during the years when the Catholic Church was forced to practice in secret. “I sincerely forgive the king and those who caused my death, and I ask you to receive baptism.” -St. Paul Miki
