Nancy FloryPetty Officer 1st Class Andrea Dubus didn’t hesitate to join the Navy after 9/11. “It was my calling from God,” she says. Then a serious accident aboard a ship in Japan led to her having a foot amputated.

Her faith has guided her through her 14 years in the military. Even more importantly, it led her through recovery after the injury. She told her story to Christian Today.

Now an Athlete

Now she’s an athlete competing in the U.S. Department of Defense Warrior Games. Over 250 athletes participated in this year’s games, held in Chicago earlier this month. They represented the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Special Operations Command. Some also represented the U.K. Armed Forces and the Australian Defence Force.

The Warrior Games website explains: “The athletes symbolize to all wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans across the nation and around the world that individuals can recover from a serious injury or illness and lead fulfilling, productive and inspiring lives.”

Dubus participates in the track and field events that include a wheelchair track, seated discus and shot put. She also competes in the cycling event. Dubus said the event feels great and “it gives me a sense of purpose again. Everybody has welcomed me with open arms and have been really supportive. These guys have been a blessing. They’re great.”

‘It’s Not the End. Keep Going’

She now counsels others who have been wounded. “Take it one day at a time and keep breathing because life doesn’t end. There’s a scripture I like to quote, ‘I can do all things through God. He strengthens me.’ As long as you keep going, as long as you keep holding on to God, you can still keep going. It’s not the end. Keep going.”
