In the first instance, public opinion came first. President Trump’s victory in 2016 was a popular referendum on Obama-era progressivism that promised hope and change but delivered government overreach and overregulation. That Trump won the Republican nomination in the first place was a repudiation of the party’s neoconservative leanings. And nearly a decade after his entrance onto the political scene, American voters once again sent Trump back to the White House with an electoral mandate.

And part of that view entails seeing the modern State of Israel as the Israel in the Bible. In essence, the modern State of Israel is the Israel that Cruz spoke of when he mentioned what is said in Genesis 12, and it amounts to something like a dual-covenant theology; there is one way to be saved for Jews and another for Gentiles. Consistent with this, we find in the Dispensationalist movement a desire to help ultra-Orthodox Jews rebuild the Temple so they can recommence the Old Testament sacrifices....

The blind man Bartimaeus calls out to Jesus and, after a few rebuffs from the self-appointed gatekeepers, Jesus responds to the blind man’s request to “see” and heals him. At first glance, the account points to the need to be healed of an inner blindness, the blindness of faithlessness. And that’s not a bad off-the-shelf homily message.
