By Bishop James D. Conley, The Catholic Thing - President Trump recently announced measures to expand access to and reduce costs associated with in vitro fertilization (IVF). This is being billed as a pro-family and pro-life effort to help “American families have more babies.” While the intention and goal are noble, IVF, in fact, undermines human dignity, marriage, and family life for a variety of reasons... But first, a word to those conceived through IVF, those struggling with infertility and, by extension, those wrestling with this aspect of the Church’s teaching, which can seem counterintuitive, confusing, and even harsh.

This is big for these state races and for gauging the overall country’s mood. It could be bigger still if it presages a Republican threat to Democrats’ “second blue wall” in 2026 and 2028... In Virginia, the Republican, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, has been trailing the Democrat, former Rep. Abigail Spanberger, by double digits as recently as the beginning of October.

Regarding the conception of human children: What if mothers could be removed from the equation?... It’s a thought experiment that points to an idea so preposterous and unnatural that it seems almost incoherent. But researchers at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland published a paper Sept. 30 chronicling a process that could lead to exactly that — human eggs created from other human cells, such as skin cells, rather than produced naturally by a woman’s body.
