After President Trump’s cryptic assertion last week that his administration “will be great for women and their reproductive rights,” it should come as no surprise that he signaled support for Florida’s Proposition 4 before backtracking Friday afternoon... Trump told NBC on Thursday that Florida’s law protecting babies after six weeks in the womb is too short. “I am going to be voting that we need more than six weeks,” he said... He told Fox News the very next day: “I’ll be voting no.”

Trump has never spoken our language, and his opposition to abortion has always seemed pragmatic at best. Yet, unlike previous Republican presidents who did speak our language, he was primarily responsible for achieving the Holy Grail of the movement: the overturning of Roe v. Wade... Achieving that long-sought goal strengthened the bonds between Trump and pro-lifers, and it seemed that the bond could never be broken. Apparently Trump himself wants to test that assumption.
