Republican Party Platform, Pro-Lifers View as Mixed Bag, by Peter Pinedo

By Peter Pinedo, CNA - While previous versions of the document said that unborn children have a “fundamental right to life which cannot be infringed” and called for a constitutional amendment to guarantee that right, this year’s platform uses much more moderate language and emphasizes the role of states in protecting life... It reads: “We proudly stand for families and life. We believe that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees that no person can be denied life or liberty without due process, and that the states are, therefore, free to pass laws protecting those rights.”

Republicans and Pro-Life Leaders Look to Find Common Ground on Platform, by Peter Laffin

By Peter Laffin, National Catholic Register - But for now, at least, the pro-life movement appears willing to cede ground and work in cooperation with the Trump-led GOP against their common enemy: Joe Biden and the pro-abortion rights Democrats... On Monday morning, the 2024 Republican convention platform committee plank on abortion was released, and despite claiming to “stand for families and life,” it does not include a call for a constitutional amendment to grant personhood protections for the unborn as it had for decades. It also voices explicit support for IVF (in vitro fertilization) and contraception.

Democrats Oppose Election Integrity, by Thomas Gallatin

By Thomas Gallatin, Patriot Post - House Democrats are preparing to go to war against their Republican counterparts this week over the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. The Republican-created election integrity bill would require voters to provide proof of U.S. citizenship to cast a vote in federal elections. Despite all the “save our democracy” mumbo jumbo, it’s somehow not even remotely surprising to see Democrats object.

Atheism Is Just Wishful Thinking for People Who Crave Less Meaning in Life, by John Zmirak

By John Zmirak, The Stream - As I document in "No Second Amendment, No First", the most powerful effect of Darwinism on Christians was to convince us on some deep level that our faith doesn’t deal with facts. It cannot survive rational scrutiny, cold-eyed reflection, and modern research. Instead of moral realities derived from philosophical truths and the facts of divine revelation, our faith consists of “values,” of sentiments and fanciful hopes that emerge from our aspirations. Religion is for the heart, but science owns our heads. Faith is a thing for silly women, weak-minded boys, and the sweaty, unruly masses.
