Surprise! The Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) has returned as a hot-button issue, if it ever really left. Singapore’s Cardinal William Goh Seng Chye hopes restrictions on the TLM will be dropped, The Catholic Herald reports. In 2021, Pope Francis severely restricted the TLM, following Pope Benedict XVI’s approval of greater freedom for the older form of worship back now some eighteen years ago.

The Catholic Herald - Images of artwork created by a disgraced celebrity cleric accused of rape have disappeared from official Vatican Media websites without explanation, almost a year after the head of the Vatican’s communications outfit strongly defended his department’s continued use of the images... The offending images were digital reproductions of works created by Fr Marko Rupnik – a former Jesuit accused of spiritually, psychologically, and sexually abusing dozens of victims over a period of 30 years – mostly while based in Rome.

Illinois is no exception, and its list features American leaders of the highest level: Lincoln, Reagan, Sheen, and now Robert Prevost (Pope Leo XIV). Until the recent papal election, Ven. Sheen was probably the most-recognized American Catholic figure. But instead of seeing one man surpassed by another in the popular imagination, we should see the ascent of an American-born pope as a continuation of Sheen’s legacy in several ways.
