Democrats Sweep Key Off-Year Elections, by Elise Winland

By Elise Winland, Catholic Vote - Democrats scored a string of victories Nov. 4, winning several closely watched gubernatorial and municipal races in contests seen as bellwethers ahead of the 2026 midterms... In Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears to succeed term-limited Gov. Glenn Youngkin. With an estimated 98% of votes counted, Spanberger was ahead 57.6% to Earle-Sears’ 42.2%, according to the Associated Press... Electoral Massacre for Republicans Nationwide, by John Zmirak

By John Zmirak, The Stream - Last night’s election was a wipeout for Republican candidates in almost every important race. It’s a wake-up call and a warning before next year’s midterm congressional contest... What happened? All politics is local, so different factors decided the various races. A Peek Under the Hood, by Francis X. Maier

By Francis X. Maier, The Catholic Thing - Between half and two-thirds of U.S. adults have gambled, at least occasionally, over the past year.  Nearly 8 percent gamble every day.  This includes everything from state lotteries and online betting to local casinos.  For some, gambling is simple entertainment.  For others, it’s a serious problem... Gambling demographics are revealing.  Economic class and education matter, but not in a simplistic way... From a Catholic perspective, gambling isn’t inherently wrong, so long as it’s fair, moderate, and doesn’t compromise one’s basic needs and responsibilities to others.  But in practice, the U.S. gambling industry is organized to produce exactly the opposite results.
