In his letter, Vigano wrote that the choice in the November election is “between two radically opposed ways of conceiving the government of your Nation: you are called to choose between democracy and dictatorship, between freedom and slavery.”... “For a Catholic, there can be no question: voting for Kamala Harris is morally inadmissible and constitutes a very grave sin. Nor is it morally possible to abstain, because in this war declaring oneself neutral means allying oneself with the enemy”

The Japanese writer Yukio Mishima had a character say, “The essence of politics is this. Listen. There is no truth in politics. Politics knows that there is no truth in it. So politics is required to make a counterfeit of truth.” The counterfeiting of “facts” is perhaps the most striking of the campaign we have been exposed to, and this has been aided and abetted by an elite that is in control of so much of the access we have to news and opinion.

Could there be any better description of how we think about Catholics and voting in the United States? It has been the same thing forever. Or at least since the 1980s... That was the decade in which New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, in 1984, made his infamous “personally opposed, but…” speech about abortion at Notre Dame University.
