Mitchell, The Catholic Thing - Today, we are in a different kind of battle.  We are in a battle for the soul of humanity itself, and the battle is taking place one household at a time, one neighborhood at a time, one human being at a time.  We are in a fight to retain truth, objective reality, selflessness, and the enduring human spirit... And, in this battle, acts of greatness must be noticed, affirmed, and encouraged.  Why?  Because the younger generation is watching us.  They are watching us to understand how they should define themselves.  They will be as great as the example we give to them; they will follow the model we set for them.  And they will hope to see us asking them for their very best.

The Catholic Herald - Rupnik, 70, is accused of sexually and psychologically abusing at least 20 women for nearly 30 years at a religious community in Slovenia. Rupnik was briefly excommunicated in 2020 for absolving someone of allegedly having sexual relations with him, but was reinstated after having reportedly formally repented... The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, led by Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, continues to seek judges for Rupnik’s upcoming canonical trial, following the conclusion of the preliminary investigation.

As the years have passed, I have seen more and more illustrations of it – children, for example, who hated their parents but then became like them.  Indeed, there was a whole generation of Boomers who made “the older generation” into their enemies. They resented them for standing in the way of  “counter-cultural” new things that the younger generation wanted, insisting instead that they stay on the paths their elders had laid out for them.  The older generation controlled many of America’s institutions, especially colleges and universities, and the younger generation resented that control and strove to break through the stifling hold their elders had on power.

I’ve found that the more traditional a Catholic is, the more likely he is to answer those questions pessimistically. He’s more inclined to be skeptical of the claims coming from tech optimists that we can make a better world through man-made technology.
