To take a stellar example, the notoriously culture-bound Cardinal Robert McElroy of San Diego has just been appointed as the new Archbishop of Washington, DC. When Catholic leadership is weak at the very top, or just at the next highest level up from oneself, things become even more difficult not only for the laity but for our priests.
