By Joseph Pearce, National Catholic Register - Chesterton’s defense of Father Christmas reveals a deeper truth: Christ’s birth conquers every winter of the world... “There is no more dangerous or disgusting habit than that of celebrating Christmas before it comes, as I am doing in this article.” Thus wrote, or confessed, G. K. Chesterton in an essay entitled “Christmas that is Coming,” published in the Illustrated London News in 1906. Now, following Chesterton’s ignoble example, I am going to indulge the same “dangerous or disgusting habit.”

And much like the West, Eastern Churches remember Christ’s birth through prayer and opening oneself to the work of the Holy Spirit. Although referred to as Advent (Latin for “coming” or “arrival”) in the West, among Eastern Catholics, the season is known as the Nativity Fast.

It’s easy, isn’t it, to remember those emotions, and almost to feel them again ourselves when we see a young couple together and know that their baby is coming any day now.
